With my 1490 LMT, I just use the basic traffic service and I didn't have to register for that. It was just plug and play.

Have you driven with yours yet to see if your basic traffic service works?

Maybe I am not clicking on the right traffic button for the free lifetime, I'll look again AM

Yep, check out page 39 of your manual, under "Subscription Activation"

It says, "You do not need to activate the subscription included with your FM traffic receiver. The subscription activates automatically after your device acquires satellite signals while receiving traffic signals from the pay service provider." (So the basic service is plug and play.)

I use the basic service, and when I'm receiving a traffic signal, there is a traffic icon in the upper left corner. The traffic icon is discussed on page 40 of your manual.

If you are talking about Menu > Settings > Traffic, that refers to purchasing an enhanced service and is discussed on page 42 of the manual, "Adding a Subscription."

When all else fails ............ read the manual :D

Are you plugging in the 12-volt cord with fm antenna? That is required for the traffic function to work in any case.

Great. Enjoy it. It works super for me here in Dallas, just with the basic service.

free traffic feature disappears with map update

I have had my 1490 Nuvi for a year and loved the free traffic feature (living in the DC area it was a 'godsend'. Then! I did what I was supposed to and uploaded updated maps. Now I do NOT have the traffic feature and when I tap on the 'traffic' button it directs me to go to the website and get the free traffic subscription code. ARGH!*!*! it does not exist! have tried several 'go arounds' and still no luck!

I want my traffic warning feature back with updated maps! How do I get it back on my device?
