Nuvi 3790LMT or 3490LMT?
Which model is better? The newer, Oct 2012 release, 3490LMT or the older but higher up 3790LMT.

It's Oct 2011 i think not Oct 2012. After reading some review from http://www.garmin3490lmt.org/ i think garmin 3490lmt looks like an upgrade version of 1490lmt series (it's garmin 2012 series). Which model is better ? for me i'll wait for the new garmin 3490lmt because i believe it came with newer technology than 3790lmt. :D
  • It is difficult to recommend nuvi 3790.

It has a nice hardware and works correctly for basic navigation, but Garmin left it unfinished with may bugs. SD slot doesn't work correctly when connected to PC, multiple point routing is useless, there is no POI displayed on map, TMC use is annoying. You can even find screens, where information is truncated or unreadable, looking like a beta version of software. Since Garmin practically stopped development of this model, there is no hope to get it working as expected.

Well, I don't know how will behave 3490. But I'm pessimistic.
  • There is review of nuvi 2495M, which looks very similar to 3490:
    http://gpstracklog.com/2011/10/garmin-nuvi-2495lmt-review.html#more-12552

Now I see, that it has no reasonable multiple point routing at all. Garmin has removed VIA functionality, which was present in all previous nuvis. Now only trips are available.
  • I have had the 3490LMT now for amost a month and it is a very good GPS.
The new traffic system is wonderful. Example, we were in Phoenix and it was updating traffic congestion almost in real time and in much more detail the the radio. At home in Portland Oregon, it appears to be just as fast and accurate as a cobination of all the local traffic tools. But it is in just one place. That is good.

So far my only observed issues, are:
    1. a dificulty in calculating some longer routes when one is far enough from interstate highways.
    2. Screen Refreshes sometimes appear to hang or not complete. But, I updated to the newest software two days ago and that appears to be less of an issue.
