How is speed calculated on timing charts

This may sound like a silly question but I was recently stopped for about 2.5 hours and the chart did not show the speed going to zero.

See http://connect.garmin.com/activity/109664963

I have noticed this before and it has just been chipping away in my head.
  • Some of it depends on whether or not you have auto pause enabled on your device. Also, what did you do during your long stop -- turn the unit off? Press the start/stop button to stop the timer?
  • I just looked at your activity. It looks like you were stopped from about 3:30 to 6:00. That's pretty evident from the graphs. It looks like there was a low speed recorded during this time. This is probably just a smoothed average of the low apparent speed that happens even when you are not moving. This is normal, and is caused by the inaccuracy of GPS knowing your exact position.
