Nuvi 3790LMT Phantom Screen Press

I purchased a NUVI 3790LMT a couple of weeks ago and I have a major issue. First of all I have read the entire directions and have done about everything mentioned. I feel I'm pretty familiar with how it works. The unit and maps are all updated to the latest software as of 8/6/11. The problem below happens before and after the upgrade.

Here is my issue: I will be driving and all of a sudden the unit will act like it was touched. Most of the time it is like I touched somewhere on the map and it pulls up the "GO" screen. I have to use the "voice command" and then "view map" or touch the back button. Sometimes it acts like it hits a different place on the screen. Today it was the top bar to show the route waypoints. Also one time as I turned off the car and as I was looking at the trip summary it went to the "tools" screen. Another time I noticed that it was at the volume screen.

I have not changed the voice command to any other phase. I don't know if there is a quick voice command that goes to any screen other than the voice command menu. If so maybe it's picking up something on the radio. All I know is that I don't touch it and it acts possessed.

Does anyone have any ideas on what might be happening?

Thanks for your help. I'm going to start visiting this forum often.

Are you kidding me!!! I wait 3 days for a response from tech support and get:

"I'm happy to help you with this. I would first suggest updating the software on your unit using the webupdater program. You can download the webupdater program from the link provided below.

    http://www8.garmin.com/products/webupdater/howtoinstall.jsp "

What are we all stupid? What do you think was first thing I tried? Don't you think I've tried turning on and off all the features to try to diagnose the problem? If I'm contacting support it's because I've done all the idiot stuff and some advanced already.

This is a standard answer from tech support with no link to communicate back that all the "idiot" things have been tried. Not all people are bumbling fools that need support to put in a battery or check to see of the on/off switch is turned on. Garmin support sucks. The unit is faulty and I need it replaced this week. 3 days wasted.

I am also experiencing these phantom clicks. I would be on a 3D screen and all of a sudden, it's 2D without me touching the screen. Let's hope the next firmware release fixes this as it is quite annoying.

As much as I wasn't kind to the internet support I have to give A+ ratings to the customer service personnel. This is an issue that they haven't heard much about but worked with me through a master reset to try to clear anything in memory. I was to try it for a few days and see if this fixed the phantom screen press. They noted my problem so that the next time I called they had it on record and we didn't have to start with step one on a different customer service rep. The unit still has problems so they are cheerfully helping me with a warranty claim. Good job Garmin! My faith in your support is back.

I bought a 3490 recently and it sounds like I'm experiencing the same problems. I'll be driving along and next thing I know it's completely moved the map, I go back the navigation and 30 seconds later it's showing me exit services...very annoying. Were you able to find a fix for this or did Garmin have to replace your device? And if they DID replace it, does it work properly now?

I just had to return a 3790LMT due to this exact problem. Hoping that the replacement works, as I had to pay Newegg a FEE to get it sent back to them.

I suppose if the next one has a similar problem I'll just call Garmin directly.
