Three 1390s - None can hold Satellite Connections

I bought a 1390LMT back in April 2011 to replace a 5 year old Magellan. I was happy with the Magellan but the maps were 5 years old and they wanted $79 to update them. From the start, the Garmin couldn’t hold satellite connections. It seems like it would usually wait until I approached an intersection then go belly up on me. I worked with Tech Support until they agreed to send me a replacement. That one was no better!

So Support sent me a third unit and it’s worse than the previous two. I can leave it stationary where it has 4– 5 green bars and it will drop reception for a few minutes every 5 minutes or so. Support offered to send a forth unit (this is getting crazy!) so I told them there wasn’t much point in sending another until someone investigates what is really going on.

That got me to second level support. I’ve been working with them for a few days now but it doesn’t look like we’re making any progress. They had me go into the developer’s screen and turn on logging. I sent them the logs but they can only see that the signal drops out; Nothing more definitive than that.

Working with Support I’ve tried lots of different scenarios to try and isolate the conditions that make it fail (Could it be an environmental problem?). In usually works in a Honda Accord. It rarely works in a ’06 Corvette and is unreliable in a VW SUV. But there are lots of exceptions. It will work in the Corvette for a few days then won't work in there at all.

It is sitting next to me as I write this. It was connected for about a ½ hour then is started searching for satellites for at least 15 minutes. I took it down to the basement and it acquired satellites! Go figure.
So, three different 1390s and after 4 months of struggling, countless hours spent and I still don’t have an operational GPS unit. Since I don’t have the original s/n unit and 4 months have passed, I don’t know if I can even return this thing for a refund but I’m sure gonna try!
I am not a happy Garmin customer.
