Max Speed error

Every once in a while I'll get a top speed from my downloaded data that is incredibly high. For example: I spent five hours on mountain trails Friday at an average speed of about 6 miles an hour. Max speed reported was 82 mph! :eek:Should have been somewhere around 28 mph. Same thing for yesterday. Max speed reported at over 60 mph. It's kind of pissing me off!

Smarko
  • Other sites like strava and ridewithgps might do a better job of filtering out the spurious data. But I seldom have the issue and I've never investigated. To a certain extent, I like the fact that Garmin doesn't overly filter the upload data. That way I can see if there is something that needs attention... a ant+ sensor that's out of adjustment or low on battery, my gps signal getting blocked in some areas, etc.

But on the other hand, an option to view the data 'raw' or 'filtered' would be even better all around.

Noting this is an old and long running thread, but I've had the same recently.

Previously good GPS (dakota 20) still gives sane data, average and max speeds indicated on device seem fine, Garmin Connect comes up with junk Max Speed figure that would be physically unachievable, but when the dataset is exported to Strava it reports correctly.

Is something broken in Garmin Connect right now?
  • Strava does a lot of massaging of your data by using the gps positions and time to calculate just about everything they can from it. This makes them look good, and your device look good. And in fact it's probably accurate enough for most any use. However Garmin Connect will frequently use accumulated totals and other values that are passed in the log file and just uses the gps plots for showing the track of your activity.

There is good and bad for that. The good is that if you understand the data, you will know when somethings not working correctly and can fix it. On strava, you wouldn't know if your speed sensor wasn't working properly. On Garmin Connect you would would see tell-tail signs.

Don't get me wrong, I like Strava. They do many things very well. Especially segments.

I'm disdapointed to find this thread and this problem to be exsisting since 2011. I use Fenix Five and gloneass and ordinairy GPS. Still my speed is often spiking. Yesterday i ran 51km/h. Also the accuracy of showing my trail by position on the map is very dissapointing. My trail is often missing the roads i used with many meters. While I gave been running in a straight line IT looks like i gave been zig zaging. I think i Will returen my watch, my old polar v800 for half the money is way better.

Also my gf garmin 235 is way better. Sees like garmin cant fix this issue either and IT gas been here since 2011. Both the watch an connect showing this error.
