Elevatiopn Accuracy

This question is in regards to elevation gain accuracy and what is correct.

When I track a route (trail riding) with my 705 I might get a total elevation gain of 1800' actually indicated on the 705.

When I import the data file into the garmin Connect the elevation will indicate as 2400' total elevation gain.

If I do a longer ride the difference in elevations is even greater.

Which is correct ?
Also, how is the elevation gain calculated in the 705 vs how the Garmin Connect program figures it out ?

Thanks
Tom

The links are interesting, but they don't really answer the question. My friend has a 705 and has the same question. On a 65 mile ride this weekend, his 705 shows an elevation gain of 3800ft, but when he uploads the data to GarminConnect, GC shows an elevation gain of 4500ft. This is with the exact same data. So the question remains...how does the 705 and GC calculate elevation gain, and why are they different?

Just for kicks, I just uploaded my friend's data and my data (from my Garmin 800) to MapMyRide.com. On GC, both of our rides show about 4500ft of climbing on this route...but MapMyRide.com shows about 3400ft of climbing for both of our data on this route.

The 705 shows 3800ft of climbing. My 800 shows 4500ft of climbing.

So it appears that my 800 is consistent with GC, but the 705 is more consistent (though less so) with MapMyRide.

Would be great to get some explanation for this...
