Dakota update v4.30 bricked unit

For info really:

Dakota 20, one year and five months old, not much used.

Noticed that update v4.10 had come out so updated unit from v3.80 (I think), using web updater.
Win xp pro sp3.
Connected directly to USB port (not hub or front ports).
Batteries charged.
Same set up as used to update unit, previously.

Update went OK (I thought). I did notice webupdater updated itself, though.

Turned unit on - all ok.

Turned unit on 1 day later and it went thru initial set up - "Odd...". GPS functionality unaffected.

Pattern repeated-if unit left for, say more than 3 hours then it would go thru initial set up. If power cycled within this time, then there was no problem.

Saw that v4.30 had come out - "Ha! that will solve it!" Same set up and procedure as before....

1st Power cycle "System software missing". Bricked.

Flashed it this way and that. Turned it off and on holding top left, bottom right, elbow, dead cat. Bricked.

Some times it teases - "Erasing", "Updating"... but result the same.

Unit price plus maps/number of months working= £23.50 per month.

Shocking really.

I'll contatct Garmin support on Monday and report back.
