Guru Help wanted - corrupted TCX

I did the same basic route twice following my 705 instructions and on the device, both history files are there and appear to have the right data available, yet GC says one is corrupted.

Looking at the file sizes, the faulty one is about 170k and the correct one is 300k.

Anyone able to offer any insight or fix ?

Many Thanks

This file is incomplete. Did you hold down reset for the 3-2-1 count at the end of the ride?

You could try to recover it by converting it to a Course on the device.
Menu->Training->Courses->New Course and then select this history file. This will convert the route to a Course. Then take the newly converted Course from the tcx folder and convert it to a history file using TCX Converter. Then you can do a manual upload to GC.
  • Thank you Joneiseman for your very quick reply.

To answer your question specifically, "Did you hold down reset for the 3-2-1 count" the answer is no. I never do. I press stop and then shut down the device and have only had this happen twice since about 2005 when I got my 305, but I will take note and try and remember to do this in future. Both events have been in the last month - so perhaps I need to clear out some memory manually.

When I do Menu->Training->Courses I do not get an option for New Course, I just get a list of the ones I have entered using Bikeroutetoaster.

Can you clarify a bit more please ?

    Thank you

If you don't hold down the reset for the 3-2-1 count then if you start a new ride it will continue from the previous ride rather than creating a new history file. I think the reset gets done automatically when you connect the Edge to the computer.

Here's the page in the manual where it explains how to create a new course from history:

    https://forums.garmin.com/showpost.php?p=10555&postcount=2

You might have to scroll down to the bottom of the list of courses to see the "<Create New>" entry.
  • Thanks again.

The 705 doesn't recognise it as a valid history any more - but I managed to fudge my way around it by doing a cut & paste of the terminator string from the ride the previous day, onto the text file.

The data is there for about two thirds of the ride so thank you for helping me recover that much.

From looking at the data file using a very wide screen so that each data points measurements appear on one line, it looks like the data is collected by the 705 and then appended to the history file in blocks roughly every 10 miles/16km which is where I have laps set.

So in my case, I have lost the last block of data not written to the history file, in my case from miles 20 to 30.

Thank you again for your help.

Inside the 705, in the History folder, there is a Laps folder.

Your missing lap might be in there.
  • Here's a "refurbished" track from your data, if all your other efforts have failed, you may can use this one :o
  • Okay, something isn't right here.

I did a complete hard reset and set it all back to the factory settings and then went out for a ride for a few hours, and the only change I made was to pair the 705 with the HR strap.

When I got back, I did as suggested and pressed stop, and then held the lap button down until the device was back to nothing.

    The 705 says there is a track but GC says there isn't. Browsing the 705 I see the tcx file and the contacts area s follows;

    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="no" ?>
    <TrainingCenterDatabase xmlns="www.garmin.com/.../v2" xmlns:xsi="www.w3.org/.../XMLSchema-instance" xsi:schemaLocation="www.garmin.com/.../v2 www.garmin.com/.../TrainingCenterDatabasev2.xsd"><Activities><Activity Sport="Biking"><Id>2011-07-24T10:48:01Z</Id><Lap StartTime="2011-07-24T10:48:01Z"><TotalTimeSeconds>8377.85</TotalTimeSeconds><DistanceMeters>59954.277344</DistanceMeters><MaximumSpeed>14.670000</MaximumSpeed><Calories>2658</Calories><AverageHeartRateBpm><Value>146</Value></AverageHeartRateBpm><MaximumHeartRateBpm><Value>170</Value></MaximumHeartRateBpm><Intensity>Active</Intensity><TriggerMethod>Manual</TriggerMethod>

    And no GPS logged data.

Inside the lap subfolder there is a file called lap1.dat which appears to have all the logged points in it (called .txt to allow it to upload)

Is there a way to combine these two to create a correct tcx file and more importantly, am I doing something wrong, or has the 705 developed a fault ?

I did follow the suggestion of conversion via a CRS file and got this http://connect.garmin.com/player/101382440 which is close but no prize !

    Thanks

    Try this one. :)
  • Thank you DATEZZ.

Any insight into why the device has started doing this - judging by the original occurrence it appears to be unwilling to complete the creation of the tracklog, and stalls with the last lap incomplete.

My original course, had two of the three laps appended but not the last and on this one I had no laps set, so the whole course was omitted.

I'd like to solve the 'why' as I don't want to keep relying on your good graces after every ride !
