62st backtracking

OK, I may have missed something obvious - I am not one for reading manuals :-)

On my trusted 60CSx the function I use the most is "backtracking". Simply load a track, select the remote end and backtrack there, the unit gives you beeps as you pass track points. I never bother with routes at all, this is my favourite mode of navigation when hiking.

When I load a stored track in my62ST it simply offers to "GO" - whatever that means. I can enter a menu with lots of options, regrettably BACKTRACK isn't one of them.

Any ideas? Have I missed something glaringly obvious?

Cheers,

Leifur Hakonarson (check out WikiLoc for some of my Icelandic tracks).
  • 62St - A disappointment

I agree with you...the 62St has less features than the 60Csx. I was so quick to buy the 62St but now I am quite disappointed. I do not think 62St has back tracking.

I think Garmin separated the Trail GPSs and the Automotive GPSs. I think that the 62St was designed for the trail not On the Road.

More on the 62ST TracBack function

OK, I think I've found the TracBack function - not that it makes much difference :-(

On the 60CSx this is a generic function allowing you to navigate along any track in either direction, all you need to do is select the end you want to go towards. I even think the unit makes a sensible assumption about joining the track if you are not on it to start with.

On the 62ST this function is ONLY available for the Current Track, it appears if you select that track in the Track Manager function and then ask for it to be displayed on the map. The only option is "TrackBack", no choice of end point is offered. This obviously means the function is limited to an "upstream" direction of travel (i.e. the "Back" portion of its name means what it implies). As if this weren't bad enough the function absolutely insist that you follow the entire track - if you happen to have already started moving towards the point of origin it won't drop the points already passed (which makes a twisted sort of sense, you wouldn't then be backtracking, just making your way back to where you started WHICH IS WHAT YOU PROBABLY WANTED TO DO :-)

I may have gotten some of this wrong - what with my 60CSx, 62ST and Montana 650ST I have too many gadgets to test - I just want to USE them. It's as if Garmin's engineers make random changes to the behaviour of their gear between generations. Perhaps they imagine nobody ever buys new units in the hope that they offer a genuine improvement to the core functionality ...

PS Having said that, let's recognise that Garmin's GPSs are the best tracking receivers in the world, with a multi-GB microSD card one can go on tracking at 5 second intervals practically forever :-)
