I haven't been to the Garmin site for quite awhile to check on new hardware releases and got all excited when I saw the new Rino 65x series...only to be let down.
I initially got a couple Rino 110's for hunting, fishing, camping/hiking use many years ago and was so impressed that I upgraded and bought a Rino 530HCx which has utterly exceeded all my expectations, including adding paperless geocaching and trail biking to the mix.
The only thing the Rino series is lacking is the ability to add custom maps(map overlays).
I have written to Garmin requesting they add this feature included on other models like the Oregon/Montanna/GPSMAP series. I always got the reply that there would be no plans for this.
So when I saw the Rino 65x series, my initial thought was FINALLY they added this feature...only to be let down.
Comparing the two units side by side I see no real reason to buy another Rino. The display is larger with better resolution and I doubt the radio reception is better in the environments I use communications, and I actually like the ability to switch screens using the button method then the swipe method if I'm hunting or geocaching because of the ability to use one hand instead of two for operation.
Plus there is no temperature readout on the 65x series as there is on my 530. Not huge since you still have the weather radio, but when hunting or tracking I need silence.
Had Garmin given the new 65x series to import custom maps, I would have bought three on the spot.
I would use overlays for the following:
Marking the Mpls/St Paul skyway system. I work down town and move around by Bus at times after work on Friday's (sometimes on weekends) and like to bum the skyway system to check everything out.
Marking the State Fairgrounds Layout so I don't have to carry that map. I can also keep track of the kids when we split up.
Unmarked bike and hiking trails.
I have a lot of these overlays on basecamp but can't import them to view on the Rino series.
I don't like the idea of having two different types of GPS for different purposes.
Garmin missed a huge oportunity here IMHO. I wish some creative developer would come out with a third party software that would allow importing overlays on the Rino 530.
