Newbie route help

Hey guy's/girls. So I just got a nuvi 1200 today, first ever gps unit, and I'm already confused haha I tried looking on here but couldn't find what I needed so here goes...

I'm taking a trip from New Orleans to Montreal and would like to stay on route 11 the whole time. I'm breaking it up into a few days so I wanted to save my route for each day. Trouble is it only is giving the route on the main highway, not route 11, and I have no idea how to make it switch from the I-89 to Route 11. I tried making my route in google maps then sending it to my unit but it wouldn't send the whole route, only my destination. So... can anyone tell me how to get alternate routes on this thing?

Thanks

Check your avoidances, if I-89 is a tool road, you can set it to avoid those.

Other than that, you can force the Nuvi to pick Rt 11 by putting waypoints on that route. How many? As many as it will take to get the job done.

Nothing in avoidances seemed to help. I mapped out the route I wanted on mapquest using waypoints then sent it to the nuvi but when I go to favourites and pick it it doesn't include my waypoints, it just sticks to I-89 again. Do you mean doing that on the nuvi itself instead of using mapquest? Thanks

Edit: I think I realize my mistake. When I placed the pins on mapquest I didn't set them to be route stops. I'm doing it all over again and hoping it works this time haha
