GPSMAP 640 Screen Freeze since new firmware

Former Member
Former Member
My GPSMAP 640 is currently experiencing random but frequent (every 15 to 20 minutes) screen freezes since updating to Software v3.60. A re-start is required to return to functionality. Everything was fine with the prior version of software. The issue seems map-independent, as it occurred with the original version of maps (2010) as well as the new version (2012). Makes no difference if the unit is following a custom route or just doing a GO TO.

Is this a 'known' issue? Is there a way to revert to a prior version of the operating software for this device?

Any other ideas?

Cheers,
Doug

I don't have a 640 so you may have to call Garmin to see if you can load a
    older version of software.

But have you tried a master reset?

How do I perform a Master Reset on my portable marine chartplotter (GPSMAP 620 or 640)?

Warning - Performing a master reset will erase all saved user data such as waypoints, routes and tracks that have been saved in the device. For instructions on how to backup user data, please refer to the FAQ titled "How do I backup user data (waypoints, routes, and tracks) from my GPSMAP 620 or 640 series device?".

To perform the master reset, please follow these instructions:

With the device powered OFF, press and hold the Upper Left corner of the screen
    Turn the device ON
Continue to hold the Upper Left corner of the screen until the message "Do you really want to erase all user settings?" appears
    Choose Yes
The device will now restart. When it fully boots, the device will be set back to factory default settings.

Yes it does look like this has been a problem in the past.

Why does my GPSMAP 620 or 640 freeze or shut down after it has been turned on for a brief period of time?

If a GPSMAP 620 or GPSMAP 640 randomly freezes or shuts off after being on for brief period of time, the device's internal operating system will need to be updated. Garmin has discovered this occurs in devices that are running older versions of software.

To update the internal operating system of this device, please download and install WebUpdater.

Once the program is downloaded and installed on the computer, connect the device to the computer and run the WebUpdater program.

Follow the on-screen instructions and the WebUpdater will update the operating system of the device.

Gpsmap 640 lockup issue on-going since March!!

    Garmin,

Who is monitoring this post? I've had this issue since early March. I was sent a reworked GPSMAP 640 back in March. No one was aware at that time there was an issue.

I did talk to Product Support Specialist, Lance Cavanaugh on June 29th 2011. Mr. Cavanaugh, Asscociate 5915 did indicate that this was a known issue and a fix did not exist at this time. Reset did not fix this issue.

I was told to shutdown the unit every 20 minutes. This is a safety issue and has not worked very well. Many "U" turns thinking the display is providing me current routing information.

Please provide an earlier Map and Firmware release till this gets resolved please. There is nothing posted that talks about a known issue. Can someone please keep GPSMAP 640 Users informed as to what timeline is being used to resolve this?

I have the same problem as EDITWIZ and others. I just returned from a 1000 mile round trip drive. Shutting down and restarting the unit every 20 minutes is ridiculous and unacceptable! Please update your firmware to fix this bug.
  • I also have the same problem since the last firmware upgrade. Just came back from a 2000 km trip. Restarting the unit every 20 minutes drove me crazy, not to say that we missed a few turns as we were unaware that the unit was frozen.

This problem needs to be fixed rapidly. It makes no sens to pay so much $$$ for a GPS (more than 4 times the price compare to normal automotive gps) when it freezes like this !

Garmin, thank you for your attention to this matter.

    Nuvi 760 freezes

This occurred following a recent software OS update. The unit will 'boot' and then freezes and turns off after about 30 seconds.

Solution is now a known issue with Garmin. They sent me a revision to the previous OS by e-mail which fixed the problem.
