Hi

I have the cables for the Garmin Etrex H to connect to PC and downloaded the USB drivers but when I go onto the Geocaching website, it says that it cannot find the device.

Have you installed the Garmin Communicator Plugin?

Does your eTrex H show up on the plugin test page?

    Hi

I have the usb cable and converter and it cannot recognise the drivers so I installed them off the Garmin website as it recommended. I have downloaded the plugin but on the test page it still cannot find the device. I have tried programs such as EasyGPS but still no luck

Also tried on 2 different computers

The eTrex H doesn't have a USB interface so the Garmin USB drivers aren't needed and are in fact useless. What you do need are the drivers for your Serial-USB adapter. That driver most likely assigned some high COM port number to the adapter. Garmin's Communicator plugin may or may not see that COM port.

"The plugin works best with devices that connect to a computer via USB cable. Although some devices that connect to a computer via serial cable or serial-USB adapter will work with the plugin, they are not officially supported, so we cannot guarantee compatibility or provide customer support."

It can probably be made to work by changing the assigned COM port in the driver property pages (e.g. to COM1 - COM4) but I don't have the time to explain how to do that right now.

In old computers containing Serial RS232 the original Garmin cable works well.

In new computers having only USB ports an adapter USB to Serial is needed and driver creating a "virtual" serial port COM3. Driver should come with the adapter. It can be for example CH340, CH341, PL-2303.

I have 4World Adapter with a small CD attached. It contains i.e. CH349 driver (in the R340 directory). This driver installed COM3 on Windows XP in my computer. Easy GPS and GPS Babel connect easily to Garmin EtrexH through this adapter (using COM3). Some time ago I was using CH341 downloaded from the internet.

PL-2303 executable installer file from that CD instals a driver, but device manager shows it as incorrectly working (with yellow question mark). And COM3 doesn't appear. Perhaps instaling it's driver files from files copied from
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp\PL-2303_loggedDrv
directory created by exe installer would succeed, but I didn't check that. However there are also installers in the internet.

PL-2303 and HL-340 are perhaps chipset names, some people say in the internet that PL-2303 is better.

Maybe mounted PCI RS232 card (controller) like these ones:

would work with Garmin serial cable without any adapter and driver ?
