Nuvi 1490T does not show map on data card

Sorry if this question has been answered before.

I have downloaded a new map onto a data card. According to the Garmin website the download was completed successfuly. I can see the file on the card from my computer but when I go to Map Info on the Nuvi it only shows the maps installed on the device. Where have I gone wrong?

Many thanks.

The map (.img file) was probably placed in the \Garmin folder on your card. Create a \Map folder on the card and move all files from \Garmin to \Map. You could also just rename \Garmin to \Map.

Some older Garmin products require maps in the \Garmin folder while newer ones use the \Map folder. Garmin's software will normally figure out which one to use. However this may not have happened if you had the card in a card reader when your transferred the map.

FYI this post tells you how to make your SD card, in a card reader, appear just like your 1490T. That way maps will be automatically written to the correct folder.

Thanks for your help. The SD card was in the Garmin Nuvi when I downloaded the map. There is a folder called MAP and it contains three files. Any ideas?

    Thanks.

Sounds like everything is in the right place.

On your 1490T all map products in the unit and on the SD card should be shown in

    Tools -> Settings -> Map -> Info

although they must have green tick marks next to them otherwise they won't display on the map. I assume from your initial post that your map product isn't showing there.

What map product did you load to the SD card? Perhaps it isn't compatible with the 1490T. Also can your provide the filenames of the files in the \Map folder on the SD card.

Hi Stuartmw, exactly, the new downloaded map does not display in the map info.
    I downloaded the correct map.

There are only three files in the MAP folder on the card and this is the only folder:
    Europe_2012_10.gma
    Europe_2012_10.img
    Europe_2012_10.unl

I suspect the download has failed. It still appears to be available for download on the Garmin site, should I download again or will I have to buy another download?

    Thanks.
  • I suspect the download has failed.

Sounds like that either the download or transfer to your device failed.

The .img file should be GB in size but I don't own that product so I can't provide an exact figure.

You might run a Windows check on the SD card drive to ensure that it is not corrupted.

If everything is ok I'd download and install again. There should be no need to purchase again.

BTW when the process is complete do NOT just unplug your nuvi (with the card in it). Make sure you use the Windows "Safely Remove Hardware" feature to ensure that all data is written to the card. Failing to do this can result in corruption.

Since my last post I have been trying to download the map again but with no success. Mostly I get this error message, "method with the requested number of arguments not found – session may have timed out” or sometimes a message relating to "parsing failure", sorry I do not remember the exact message content.

I am using a broadband connection with reasonable speed and it was declared as optimum by the Garmin website for downloading.

    Any suggestions on this one?

    Thanks.

To close this string I just let you know that after about 15 attempts I was finally successful in downloading the map and accessing it on the Nuvi.

Thanks to all for your great help.

You might want to backup everything in the \Map folder on the SD card just in case it goes bad. That way you only have to copy everything to a new card avoiding all the download/install hassle.
