etrex Vista HCx route function broken

On Vista HCx, I created a route using 5 waypoints and clicked navigate. When I arrived at the first waypoint, the GPS didn't point to the next waypoint. It kept pointing at the first waypoint until I deleted it from the route. I set up off road transition to Distand at 50 yds but it didn't help either.
I'm using the GPS for hiking.

Is my Vista HCx defective?

When I arrived at the first waypoint, the GPS didn't point to the next waypoint.

When you create a route (not a goto) the unit is expecting you to pass by each point in turn. I suspect you started navigating somewhere between the first two points so it was directing you to go back to the first waypoint (i.e. the starting point you'd given it).

Some units (e.g. my nuvi 1490T) will ask whether to route you back to the starting point or begin from your current position but my GPSmap 76CSx does not. It seems the eTrex models don't either.

Remember that any GPS unit is a small computer and not a human. Its is simply doing what you asked it to do (route you via the 5 waypoints).

My best advice is to navigate from one waypoint to the other manually, this way you are in charge not the GPS. I've done so successfully for years. I mostly ignore routes on handheld GPS units.
