Junction view and lane assist update

Former Member

Hi,

I just got a new 3790T with lifetime map updates. I live in Europe so it has only European maps preloaded. Now, I'm going to US this fall and would like to use my Garmin there. I wanted to buy the North America maps package, however the product description says this:

"Please note, these full-version maps DO NOT contain premium content such as Lane Assist and Junction View. These features only are available on the preloaded maps within your device or through a specific update for the mapping region of your device."

So as I take it, if I buy the North America map package, the GPS will work in US but won't have the J.V. nor L.A. feature. Is there any way to be able to get them together with the map package for my unit?

I don't know if you can legally, that is through Garmin, get the JV/LA feature for "add-on" maps but I can give some technical details.

The JC/LA information is located in a .jcv file in the \.System\JCV folder in your nüvi. The filename varies by the map product and version.

Map update downloads do include the .jcv file (in the temp folder after downloading) even if you only save the maps to your PC so if you have a lifetime map update subscription you can get the file that way.

Note: .jcv files can be large so it's not practical to email them.

    Thank you for your answer!

I have the lifetime update but only for European maps, which are preloaded.

So if I get it right, I could buy the North America map package and then get the JCV file from someone who has the NA maps preloaded with the latest update and the unit then loads the JV/LA features from the file automatically if I copy it into certain folder on the memory card?

And one more thing, is it possible to completely separate the European and North American maps, I mean, can I have two SD cards with each map set, that I would plug-in depending on the place I want to use? Or do I have to delete one map set to be able to use the other one?

I think that'll work but am not 100% sure. I'm trying to figure out if it'll work myself.

I'd leave your preloaded maps (for Europe) on the unit and load any additional maps to a large capacity SD card. You can have multiple map products on a card (I have 4). The trick is to rename the files as Garmin;s software will always write a

GMAPSUPP.IMG file to the \Map folder on the SD card.

overwriting the existing (if any) one.

    Rename GMAPSUPP.IMG to GMAPSUPx.IMG where x is a digit from 1-9.
    For example I have

    GMAPSUP1.IMG
    GMAPSUP2.IMG
    GMAPSUP3.IMG
    GMAPSUP4.IMG

    on my card.

BTW I incorrectly stated that the Lane Assist data is in the .jcv file. It's actually in the map data itself so you'll have that.

    I can confirm that it'll work on a 1490T with v5.30 firmware.

    For details see this post.

Of course you still have to find someone that'll provide you a copy of the .jcv file.

Thanks a lot! I will try my luck.
  • I was in the states last November, using US maps bought on DVD (and eventually transferred to a SD in my Nuvi 3790T, I hope they have fixed the USB download bug! see other threads.)
You can download all or just the states that you are in.

I can concur that you do not get junction view nor lane assist.
You also do not get the 3D mapping images that I get here in the UK.

they may help in cities like chicago where you get several layers of roads, and obviously no gps lock except for the upper level.

I did not try to obtain the extra files, since it took me so long to get any files working in the first place!

( I also purchased the Chicago city explorer maps, they were useless no better than my ipad, you need a good satellite lock to get any public transport information, difficult in my hotel room, and often on the street, impossible whilst on the metro!)

Stuartmw, thanks to you, I know how to get the .jcv using the fake-nuvi SD method, and I love that method. But I would like to be able to use the method you give above too. However, after installing Full Coverage of North America to my computer, and checking the box “Leave installation files on my computer”, I cannot find the .jcv file in my temp folder.

I am running Windows 7, so the temp folder that Garmin writes the installation files too is:
    C:\USERS\%username%\AppData\Local\Temp\IMG

The .jcv must be inside of some package. I looked in the .cab files, but didn't find a file name that looked like it could be the .jcv (DxxxxxxxA.jcv), but that doesn't mean it isn't there somewhere. I even re-downloaded to assure CCleaner hadn't deleted anything.

    Am I missing something?
Can you give me any other information to work with?

    Thanks, Lilla

The .jcv must be inside of some package...

No, the map updater saves it in the TEMP folder but at that point the .jcv is not complete. The program makes modifications to the downloaded file and writes that to the nuvi. Once the map update is complete the downloaded .jcv is deleted but the IMG folder and files in it are left behind (no idea why the .jcv isn't as well).

In short you need to use the .jcv written to your "fake" nuvi drive. If you created a full map installation that .jcv contains everything you need.

    I hope that helps.
