Install French map into Garmin Nuvi 260 USA

Hi

First I'm not sure if this is the right place of the forum to post this, let me know if not.

Is it possible to install a French map into a Garmin Nuvi 260 that was bought in the US with a US map ?

On Garmin site, when I try page "buy map" (French site page), Nuvi 260 doesn't exist (there's a 250, 255 and a 265)...

If I try Firefox module for Garmin, the 260 is recognizes automatically, but it's only possible to update existing USA map...

I'd experiment like that: Download the relevant OSM maps from Cloudmade and put the img file on a new SD or microSD card (whatever the 260 takes). Now see if you can see those maps on the screen when you scroll the map to where France is.

If so, end of problem. These maps are pretty good in general, with exceptions, but seing the price, who can complain?

Google will help you with the URLs.

Ok thanks for the info, I didn't know there were "free" maps done by community, I'll let my dad know (this is for him actually) and will let you know if he tries.

I used those in Martinique and was very happy with them, I could concentrate on the driving and let the magic box do the navigation. And they drive like nuts over there :)
