Pre defining routes

I am trying to use my relatively new Garmin GPS Map 62S for walks along routes i have pre-defined in Basecamp prior to hitting the trail. I can generate a route in basecamp and save it to the device. When i hit the trail, i can see both this save route as a coloured line and my current track. Am i correct in thinking this is how i should be doing it (simply seeing on the screen how close my current track aligns with the saved route) or is there a more sophisticated way (using the compass, for example, to vector accurately to a pre-defined route)? Many thanks

It looks to me that you are doing fine. I would not use the compass much for an activity as you are describing. This is not like Geocaching where you are looking for the proverbial needle in the haystack and the compass will be useful. It is a good idea to look at it to get an idea of your direction of travel, but that is it.
