Great hardware, poor software

I just got my new Forerunner 405. The hardware is amazing.

But software is very disapointing... Garmin connect has very limited functionnalities, and Garmin Training Center is no better. For me those two software are at the level of a student project.

From a world class manufacturer as Garmin, it is very disapointing. There is a lot of potential in this GPS watch that could be unfold with a little bit more of software development.

If by any chance the product manager of this 405 reads this : please consider that many of your potential customers are software educated people and data cracks as well... It won't cost a lot to develop the appropriate features in your software, but make sure to take into consideration the needs of real runners, not only some lonely lunatic programmer left alone to build your software :)

  • What are "the needs of real runners" that are missing?

some very simple features would be nice for the data mining :

    - ability to switch from speed to pace in the graph scale
    - ability to see a computed average on some parts of the graph
    - ability to freely play with the graph scale, just like in a spreadsheet
    - abilty to cut, paste, and edit in part the data in general

Other nice to have for me :

    - for the sunday long runs, possibility to plan a route in Bling or Google Map and upload on the Forerunner. Now you have to 1) run the route with the watch 2) upload to the software and finally 3) download back to the GPS watch, witch does not make sense.
    - access to a lower level of the GPS watch for advanced training. For instance, ability to set exactly at what pace the wacth would start beeping. The actual feature is unclear, definitly not enough accurate.
    - get back to google maps, but that's another topic ;)

Thats already available using gmap, mapmyrun, bikeroutetoaster and dozens of other free online software and mapping systems.
