60 CSx Point max 500

Is there a way to up the max number of points that my 60 CSx will accept? Anything over 500 will be truncated. From what I see the only way around this is to split the track into 500 or less segments.

    update:
I have tracks saved on my computer. Some are over 500 points. I thought if I split these "0ver 500" tracks I could send them either one at a time or as a group of tracks and they'd both seen as one track. It didn't work. I can send either one but not both. :(

Any help would be most appreciated.

    update #2:
When uploaded to the GPS it saves the first 13 alphanumeric characters (and spaces) of track name. When you split the the file into segments of <500 points you need to rename the track so that the GPS can distinguish them.

    Example:
High Cliff Trail / High Cliff Trail 1 wont work.
High Cliff Trail / High Cliff 01 will work.

    See user manual page 44.
You can set the max number of trackpoints per track.
The unit will only store a max of 10,000 trackpoints.
The unit has a max of 20 stored tracks so default is probably 500 points max.
I am guessing but it looks like if you set the max trackpoints to 5,000 then you will only be able to store 2 tracks.

I have an old GPSMAP76S and quit saving tracks to the unit. The unit removed all the time data making the saved tracks useless for fitness which I wanted. When saving tracks the unit also filtered the trackpoints and made some tracks useless for following them again because it removed a lot of minor turns in the trail making it straight.

You do not state what mapping program you use. If it is Mapsource, to to Track Properties and then click the Filter button. It will become clear from there.

Sorry. I'm using Base Camp on a Mac.

Actually I have the track points set to 10,000. Even with this setting I'm only able to install (from my comp) tracks with a max of 500 points. I've tried to download tracks from wikiloc.com and have had success. Wikiloc gives you options to trim (simplify) the points or split the track into <500 segments.

I'm just beginning to learn all of this.

    Thanks for the replies,

    Hello Rob,

It sounds like your 60 is very similar to my 76. I had a similar problem with my 76 when I tried to put a large track back into the unit.

The devil is in the details, as usual.

10,000 trackpoints is not the same as 10,000 track points, but you knew that already right?

Trackpoints are only in the ACTIVE LOG generated by the gps when it is recording a track.

Track Points are generated by the gps when you tell it to Save Track. Actually they are like waypoints all strung together into one track. The gps will take the ACTIVE LOG (which could have 10,000 trackpoints) and filter it down to 500 track points. Then I must erase the ACTIVE LOG so it is ready to start fresh. Your 60 might be different. I never do that anymore. I load the ACTIVE LOG into my computer every day and save it there with a name. ACTIVE LOGS display a much more accurate track on the map.

I have my 76 setup to record 100 miles of trail and then stop without over writing. It does not care how long it takes me to cover the 100 miles, 1 hour or 1 year, but of course I have never gone over 100 miles in one day so it works perfect for me. Using the distance method does not waste any trackpoints when I am not moving. It works just like Auto Pause. It waits until I have moved 0.01mi (53feet) and then records the next trackpoint.

See page 26 on your owners manual and go to Track Log Setup Page > Uncheck Wrap When Full > Record Method Distance > Interval 0.01mi or Most Often.

You have to do like TSAWCHUC said to load a track back into your 60. You must filter the track you have down to 500 points or less and then it will load.

OR if you have an ACTIVE LOG (with less than 10,000 points) you can load that into your 60. It will put a breadcrumb trail on your screen and you can follow it visually with the cursor. If the ACTIVE LOG is 9,000 points or less you can check Wrap When Full and then you will be able to record your entire track as you follow the screen because the gps will start over-writing the original ACTIVE LOG starting at the beginning which should always be behind you assuming you also started at the beginning.

Your 60 has an SD card that you can save tracks to. It may not filter the ACTIVE LOG down to 500 points doing it that way but you will have to experiment with that yourself.

I know....way more info than you wanted and there is even more for some other day if you get interested.

    Thanks Don!

I'm having a lot of fun with this but all the head scratching is starting to show.
