Calorie counting app for ipad, iphone that imports Garmin data?

Hey friends,

I have a Garmin forerunner 405, and I track my weekly runs, weight gain after being on crutches has me me face the sad fact that I must go on a full-on calorie counting diet!

:(

I got on the scale this morning and I'm at the highest weight on my whole life 131 lbs! I've been running but not watching what I eat... and so I've gained weight not lost it... time to count calories!

I bought the withings wifi scale and it's amazing, I step on each morning and it makes a graph of my weight. To my dismay there is no software for the ipad that integrates the withings scale and Garmin data. (Rubitrak for macintosh will do it on the desktop... but it is expensive.)

Well, I'm looking for some software to track what I eat for my ipad. There are so many calorie counters I don't know where to start.

Do any of them integrate the data from Garmin connect?

I'm starting to feel like NOTHING integrates Garmin data... very annoying. Prove me wrong!

I have not found any that sync to a Garmin, so I'm left inputting manually, which honestly, I've found not to be a huge annoyance (but a little bit of a pain). I've used loseit.com and just started trying out myfitnesspal.com. My initial analysis is that loseit has a better user interface which allows for easier input. However myfitnesspal seems to have a better database of foods, with more nutritional information available. I'm trying myfitnesspal for two more weeks before deciding which one is best. Both have iphone/ipad apps.

If you have a Mac you can use Calories 2. It has an iPad and iPhone App and imports data from the Withings wifi scale.

Not sure about anything that integrates with Garmin or even if they offer an open API for developers.
  • I use this:

    http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/hrm-sports-training-log-fm/id371111663?mt=8

Not quite a calorie counting app but it does allow youto have the data from Garmin Connect on your iPhone.

    I use this:....

Does it get the info from Training Center off your PC/Mac or from Connect? The reason I ask is all my runs/rides are named and tagged on Connect but not on Training Center. It says Training Center but in one of the reviews it says from Connect.

If it can inport from Connect does it also pull all the metadata (names and descriptions)?
  • All of the above are possible.

I've been looking for the same thing and I've tried a few at great expense. So I thought I'd add my experiences here so others can avoid the wasted time/money where possible.

Edibles - Doesn't have a great looking interface. About $5. Must do manual input of weight and exercise.

ControlMyWeight by CalorieKing - Great interface. No syncing with Garmin or Withings so manual input required. $5.49 in iTunes Australia.

MyNetDiary - be careful with these apps, both iPhone and iPad Apps are expensive. $5 and $10+. Then, if you want Withings integration, you must pay a monthly fee! No Garmin sync either. So manual inputs required.

Livestrong - Probably better for US based users as the food selection isn't right for Australia (my opinion). Cant recall integration with Withings and certainly not Garmin. $2.99 Australia app store.

Daily Burn - Probably better for US based users as the food selection isn't right for Australia (my opinion). Withings does sync with this app. Not a great interface. Garmin did not when I used it. Free.

Sparkspeople - Another app probably better for US based users as the food selection isn't right for Australia (my opinion). Horrible interface online. App interface is below par too. And I think $4.49 in Australian app store.

ShapeUp – not tried this yet but would love to hear from others. Interface looks great. Syncs with RunKeeper and Withings. If you use tapiriik to sync between Garmin and Runkeeper, then you have a solution here maybe. However, runkeeper interprets the Garmin files differently so you will see slight differences in Calories and mileage. Free in app store.

Would be great to hear what others think.

    good luck.
  • I used to use LostIt, but recently switched over to myfitnesspal. It syncs with garmin connect, and I believe with your scale as well. Good community and like someone else mentioned it has a better food database.

I don't care for their desktop site, but I love both their iphone and ipad apps.

MyNetDiary - If you're a premium subscriber they offer complete Garmin integration including the various stages of sleep, etc. I've tried them all and it's by far the best app available if you're willing to pay for the subscription option.
  • Unless I'm missing a specific requirement.... MyFitnessPal will do what you want:

    http://www.myfitnesspal.com/

Firstly it's a great calorie tracker.

Secondly, your Withings/Nokia app can connect to it. And Garmin Connect can also connect to it. So MyFitnessPal will get the latest weight from your scale, and Garmin Connect will read the weight from MFP, so they all stay in sync in terms of weight.
In the other direction, your exercise stats such as calories burned from Garmin Connect will get sent to MyFitnessPal.

I have the Withings scale also, and it all works very nicely for me.
  • I use my fitness pal to get my weight into GC as i can enter my weight in Stones & Pounds in MFP and GC only gives the option of pounds or kilograms
