GTU 10 Short Battery Life

Hi new forum member, but long time Garmin user.

I just bought a GTU10 tracking unit that I use for my dog. I keep it on the dog in the event that she is lost I can determine her location. The device is set up in the "on demand" configuration which means that it does not monitor her geofence, but waits for a location query. In this configuration Garmin estimates battery life to be 7 days. I have for the past three days (since new) gotten almost exactly 24 hours before I am notified of a low battery. I have an inquiry into Garmin with no reply yet. All but one of the reviewers on Amazon complain of poor battery life for this device.

My question is whether I can install a plug in battery powered charger into the device to effectively piggy back a larger battery onto the device. I am thinking of something like the Duracell Instant USB Charger. I notice that Garmin sells a cable that can be plugged into the GTU10 and hard wired to 12 volts to use in a vehicle, but no not know if that cable has some special characteristic that allows the unit to perform normally while plugged in.

Thanks in advance for any insight or advice to help me extend the battery life.

Since I have no replies, I'll provide an update. Per Garmin, the reason for poor battery life is that the device is stored inside and turned on. Because it is not getting both a GPS and cellular phone signal at all times, it deletes its battery trying to connect. The only real fix is to store it where it can get a continuous signal (i.e. outside), or turn it off when inside.

I'm still looking at a way to piggy back a bigger battery onto the unit.
