I installed a new battery in my 650 using tools supplied with battery and following video instructions. After charging battery unit is powering up but touch screen is not working. I've checked for an unintentional disconnect, but nothing is apparent. Any suggestions?
Since my 650 wasn't working and I had nothing to loose, I opened it up again and found that there are two ribbon cables running from the screen to the main board. The wider cable had broken off just where it attaches to the main board. It took some time and a bit of trial and error, this problem isn't fatal. I was able to remove (with tweezers) the small sliver of cable still attached to the board. But then I was not able to feed the remaining end into the now empty slot. However, with a magnifying glass and patience, I was able to lay the ribbon cable over the contacts on the board, using a small piece of tape to hold it in place. Finding the exact place to attach it took some time -- each effort followed by testing the touch screen. Even when I found the correct spot, the cable had to be held down with slight pressure -- more that my piece of tape was providing -- to make enough contact. I cut a small piece of firm foam, layed it over the connection, then carefully closed the cover.
This did the trick. But you can be sure I'll not take this GPS apart again. Next time it needs a battery, I'll replace the unit with a new one that provides lifetime updates. That won't solve the problem of premature battery failure, but it's something . . .
