best pace in forerunner 110 ridiculously high

On my activity page on Garmin Connect, one of my runs says "best pace" of 1:18. That's 46 mph!

It doesn't happen every time, but it happens often enough to make me wonder how this value is calculated, whether it could be done more accurately, and whether this is happening to other users.

Thanks!
  • Having a very high instantaneous pace or speed isn't that unusual, although your value is on the high side of high. It most likely resulted from a bad set of GPS points that messed up the calculation. Using a footpod (which isn't possible with a 110) might help. The charts shown in Garmin Connect are usually smoothed and are a bit more believable, so you may want to rely on that.

Hi, thanks for the reply! This is what I'm wondering about. The "best pace" feature is fairly prominent on Garmin connect, especially on the Activites page, so shouldn't it either be less prominent or fixed? I mean, it's pretty much meaningless data, if it's not unusual to be grossly wrong, right?

I do use the carts to get an idea of pacing, but of course you can't see that from the Activities sheet. Mostly I rely on average pace by mile, but at times, for instance when there's a particular downhill or I'm doing a fartlek, it's nice to know my best pace.
  • Sometimes it happens particularly at the start of a run if the position hasn't been established - I know if I go stand on my doorstep and acquire satellites that it will usually show a pace in the low minutes (I've seen 46 seconds for a kilometre) then another couple getting higher before showing __.__ - if I start recording before the pace goes blank, I get the spurious pace you mention.
