Can anyone explain health readings please

Self confessed new to all of this measuring however I am trying to improve and much of this may be easy for those who know however I don't so help will be appreciated. I have search Garmin and Tanita sites and cannot find a good explanation of the information that appears now that I have managed to synch my Tanita scale with my 210 - although there are a number of notes at the bottom of the screen I have no undestanding of what some of them mean.

Daily Calorific intake? does this mean how much it thinks I have had or is this a recommendation ?

Metabolic age ? what does this mean for me? should I be adjusting my heart rate zones?

Visceral fat ? Have no idea what this is?

My bone density is varying by 2 or more pounds from day to day - how on earth can that be right ?

In short a full explanation of what this all is and what is means would be great - if anyone has a link to where the information is I would be very grateful. :confused:
  • I have the BC-1000 and here's what I understand these to be as well as below is their statements:

    OK so I'll start with my general observations, the scale is extremely accurate from measurement to measurement as well as from one BC-1000 to another (I have 2 I use) That means the scale is very precise. the BIG HOWEVER, is that it can vary dramatically from day 2 day, it seems to me body water has the biggest effect on scale and throws off the muscle & fat figures tremendously. i.e. weight yourself, do heavy exercise for 1 hour, then weigh again, because of sweat water loss it will say you lost 3lbs of muscle (impossible) and gained 2 lbs of fat (impossible). So, pick a time of day and keep consistent with your measurements for more accurate trending of results. I scale in every morning before my shower and before any intake of food & water. I also empty my bladder but that's it. because a BM can also change the numbers a bit.

    Visceral Fat is the fat around your midsection, the gut fat as opposed to the fat spread throughout the body & muscles.

    Bone density shouldn't vary at all, I've been taking measurements for 3 months and it's been 7.6lbs with the exception of 1 time it came in at 7.4... so that seems strange. I don't think it actually measures it, it's more of a calculation based on weight, height, and the other stats... i.e. if it knows your frame, and muscle/fat & water mass, than everything left over must be bone.

    Metabolic age is based on how healthy you are. So if you are really in your 30's, if you are 40lbs overweight it probably will calculate you as in the 50's due to shortened life span as well as your body having to do significantly more more each day... If you get down to healthy weight levels you age drops into the teens!

    I'm not to keen on the caloric intake - it's a direct calc doubling the basil metabolic rate - maybe that's a 1-day max spike in calories you could take, mine is always like 4200 range... that would plump me up if I ate that much daily.

    Here's what Tanita says each is:

    Weight - Weight in pounds (lb), stone-pounds (st-lb) or kilograms (kg) depending on whether you selected "English" or "Metric" units in your User Profile.

    BMI - Body Mass Index is a number calculated using your weight and height that can be used to estimate if your body weight is considered healthy.

    Basal Metabolic Rate - The minimum level of energy your body expends when at rest to function effectively including your respiratory and circulatory organs, neural system, liver, kidneys, and other organs.

    Metabolic Age - The average age associated with measured Basal Metabolic Rate.

    Daily Calorie Intake - An estimate of how many calories you can consume within the next 24 hours to maintain your current weight.

    Physique Rating - An assessment of your physique according to the ratio of body fat and muscle mass in your body.

    Body Fat Percentage - Percentage is the amount of body fat in your body expressed as a proportion of your body weight.

    Fat Mass - The mass of your body fat in pounds (lb), stone-pounds (st-lb) or kilograms (kg) depending on whether you selected "English" or "Metric" units in your User Profile.

    Body Fat Range - Indicates the range your percentage body fat places you in based on your gender and age.

    Fat Free Mass - The total mass that is not fat, including muscle, water and bone, in pounds (lb), stone-pounds (st-lb) or kilograms (kg) depending on whether you selected "English" or "Metric" units in your User Profile.

    Visceral Fat - This rating indicates the amount of fat in your abdominal cavity. A rating of 12 or less is considered healthy.

    Muscle Mass - The mass of muscle in your body in pounds (lb), stone-pounds (st-lb) or kilograms (kg) depending on whether you selected "English" or "Metric" units in your User Profile.

    Bone Mass - The mass of bone (bone mineral level, calcium or other minerals) in your body in pounds (lb), stone-pounds (st-lb) or kilograms (kg) depending on whether you selected "English" or "Metric" units in your User Profile.

    Body Water Percentage - Percentage is the amount of fluid in your body expressed as a proportion of your body weight.

    Body Water Mass - The mass of water in your body in pounds (lb), stone-pounds (st-lb) or kilograms (kg) depending on whether you selected "English" or "Metric" units in your User Profile.
