Mileage inaccurace in Garmin Connect?

My daughters total distance reads 19.30 while the lap distance reads 23.95. We are trying to understand which one is correct and why the difference is so great between lap distance at 1 mile increments and total distance. My thought is that the lap distance is using the cadence sensor, and is probably more accurate than the total distance which is using the gps. Is this correct or not? The route is covered in trees which makes the gps inaccurate. Here is the activity file on connect. http://connect.garmin.com/activity/73915292

In another ride without trees, the GPS performed great. Total distance and lap distance where equal. http://connect.garmin.com/activity/73297025

She does have auto pause turned on, but the setting has not changed over the two rides listed above.

Would like to understand what is causing the inaccuracy, and what if anything can be done to correct it.

Thanks for any assistance
Bryan
  • I'm not sure what you mean by lap distance. Looking at the splits page for the activity you posted, there are 23 laps, but some of them have a small or zero distance. When I add up the distances in the laps, I get 19.3 miles, which is the same as the total distance. Same thing for the lap and split detail on the main page of the activity.

I don't know why you got the extra laps. What are you using to mark the laps -- autolap every mile? It also looks like there was a lot of non-moving time (a bit less than an hour difference between elapsed time and moving time), which might have something to do with the extra laps.

For the record, the lap distance is not recorded separately by the cadence and speed sensor. All distances are recorded the same way, whether it's by GPS or with a wheel sensor.

    DW,

Thanks for the keen eye...I missed the alternate lap mileage when I uploaded it. We stopped for a picnic during the ride, and she turned it off, then back on and continued. .

    Thanks
