Nuvi 1450 external power supply.

:confused:I bought a Garmin for the sole perpose of using it for lengthy road trips on the bike ( Motorcycle).
There is really no logical way to just stop every 3 hours and look for a place to charge up the Garmin via a computer nor borrow someones car to use their cig lighter.
#1. Has anyone out there found and USED an external power supply to recharge their Garmin. Pros and cons please.

#2. If the Garmin is connected to the cig lighter in a car will it stay charged while one is useing the garmin? meaning does it use the external power first and ONLY switch to internal IF the external source is shut off?

The manual is so very vague and almost worthless in many ways.
  • Yes, if it is plugged into a cig lighter or other power source it will run on that power source and charge the battery in your GPS at the same time.
If your cig lighter powers down when you shut the engine off a message will pop up asking if you want the GPS to shut off or stay on. If you select stay on it will run on the GPS battery.
External power for running the GPS should be 5 volts at 1 amp, look at the wall charger that came with your 1450. (My 1490 is 5 volts).
You should be able to hook a female cig lighter socket to your motorcycle battery and plug the GPS supplied cable into it.

    Ditto what JIMLEV1 said.

I always plug my 1490T into the car's 12-volt socket, because my power cord is also my traffic information antenna.

Therefore my nuvi is always fully charged when I take it out of the car to carry with me on a walk or whatever.
