Updating Oregon 450 renders it inoperable

Last September I purchased an Oregon 450 to use primarily for backpacking. Last night I decided to install the Webupdate program and update the software/firmware. The update seem to go fine, and then I rebooted the 450. It said it was validating the update, then showed a blue progress bar moving across the screen.

And then it died. Stuck at the boot up Garmin screen. Had to take the batteries out to shut it down. Tried to start it up several times with no luck.

After doing some research, it seems this isn't exactly a rare occurrence. I finally found a 'Forced Upgrade Using RGN file' fix, and after a couple attempts at using it I got my 450 to boot up with an older software version.

So my question is this..... do I just have to live with the fact that this GPS that cost close to $400.00 is never going to function as it should? I just have to accept the fact that I will never be able to update the software for it because if I do the unit will become a paperweight? Is there another way to update the software that works?

I'm angry and frustrated over this. What are my options here?

Thanks,
