Nuvi 1490 Sound Issues.....

I recently purchased a 1490 to replace my 1450. The sound is ok when running from the internal battery except for some scratchy sounds when the first few selections are made.

When the unit is running off the 12v power cord in my car there is a 8 second delay of all sound after booting up/turning on. I called Garmin who told me this was not normal behavior and sent out a replacement.

I received my replacement 1490 yesterday and it's doing the same exact thing my first one did with the 8 second sound delay whenever the unit is first powered on with the 12v cord. Also has scratchy sound when buttons are first pushed after first powering up.

Is anyone else having these issues ?

My 1490T's sound is working fine.

What firmware is in your unit? I've got 5.10 (the latest as of a few days ago) in mine.

If you don't know get WebUpdater and have it update everything to the latest.

There's a known issue that can cause sound issues but that seems unlikely with a new unit. Try reading this post by Garmin.

I just received my 3rd unit from Garmin and all of them are doing the same exact thing :(

They must all have this issue, I can't be that unlucky........

Or the issue is with the power cable.

Are you using the traffic receiver that came with the 1490T or the original 1450 power cable/traffic receiver? Since the issue, as reported, only occurs when powered from 12V and you've tried three 1490's (which work fine by themselves?) then logically the power source is mostly likely the issue.

I have tried different power cords with no change.

In my van when the ignition is turned off the 12v power stays on so I have to manually turn the 1490 off. When I manually turn it back on it quick boots and is ready to use almost instantly. This is when there is a 8 second delay in sound. If the unit is started from the internal battery or when power has been lost (long boot) the sound is turned on when the Garmin logo is showing making the unit 100% ready after booting up.

There is also almost always some scratchy static noise when the first couple of selections are made running off both power sources.

Interesting. That's an important distinction since my bet is that 99.9% of users let the unit turn itself off when power is removed (via the ignition). I know I do. I only use the power button when indoors and operating from the battery.

As an aside I recently used, for some days, my 1490T in a U-Haul truck where the lighter socket was always powered. In that case I unplugged the adapter and let the unit power itself off (I removed the nuvi from the truck at night). I never used the power button.

I was just on the phone with Garmin for over 30 minutes. This rep actually took the time (thank you) to hunt down and test several blue tooth and non blue tooth 1000 series units and confirmed the problems I'm experiencing.

He said the engineers were unaware of these issues :(

The 12v power socket is always on in both of my vehicles no matter which position the ignition is in. It would drive me crazy to have the unit loose power and have to switch over to internal battery when the ignition is turned off. I do service work so my vehicle/ignition is on and off several times per day.
