1490T Won't Update to v5.0 w/ Webupdater

My 1490T is currently running ver 4.3 and I am trying to update to ver 5.0. I am using Webupdater on a Win 7 / 64 bit system w/IE8. Everything seems to run fine until the process is approximately 42% complete. At that point I get the following error message. "There is not enough space on the disk." There are no suggestions on what to do to correct the problem. A check of the device in Windows Explorer shows the unit to have a total of 1.76 GB with 0 bytes free. The update says it requires 25.5 MB.

I am afraid of deleting anything without knowing exactly what is required for the unit to operate.

Any suggestions on how to proceed?

So Explorer is telling you have a full (as in, ZERO bytes free) Garmin unit and you still don't understand the issue?

I would just call their tech support so they can walk you through making some space.
  • A check of the device in Windows Explorer shows the unit to have a total of 1.76 GB with 0 bytes free.

Garmin ships their nuvi's with a bunch of files that can safely be deleted (e.g. voice files for languages you'll never use). See this FAQ post for details.

Also the unit is constantly saving data (trip log, mileage data) so it will fill over time. You can "clear" the trip log and/or mileage logs to free some space but I'm sure that won't free the 26MB you need. Deleting unneeded voice files (they're large) will get you hundred of MB of space.
  • Thank you STUARTMW. Your suggestion worked just fine. I appreciate that you understand that knowing how to delete something and knowing what is safe to delete are two different things. With so many posts on this forum about 1490T's freezing and becoming bricks I didn't want to inadvertently do something I would later regret. Thank you again.
  • You're welcome.

I've had some Garmin devices "self-brick" before but its worse when you do it yourself.

BTW WebUpdater will always show missing voice/text files so you have to untick those so it doesn't put them back again. Also if you get a message on the myGarmin web site that you need to update the unit firmware it will silently reinstall all the files you deleted. I therefore only perform firmware updates through WebUpdater.

    Problems updating solved

The problem with update failing has to do with the trash folder it creates in root.
Especially when using a Mac, links to the deleted files and the space it needs are saved to this folder.
To free up space, delete unwanted files from folders and delete the hidden trash folder from the root.

  • I'm not quite sure why you're replying to an old thread started over 2 years ago, which was solved at the time, but the comment on the mac is irrelevant since the OP was running Win7 and there is therefore no hidden 'trash' folder :)
