Long Notes Deleted without notice

I like to write complete workout notes but Garmin Connect has started to delete the note if it deems it too long without any notice or warning that the note was too long. From a little experimentation, it seems that 2000 characters (including spaces) is the maximum that the note field will save. Having a maximum size field is reasonable, although 2000 chars seems a bit small, but it is unacceptable to not notify the user of the limits.

A notice on the page is a minimum requirement. A dynamic counter would be a step in the right direction.

Previous versions of Garmin Connect would throw an error, albeit with a useless message, when selecting the Finish link if the note was too long, but now Finish will display the note like it has accepted it, but when you navigate away from the activity page and then back to the activity page you will find that your hard work has been summarily deleted. Unacceptable.
  • I just had this happen to me yesterday, after I had composed a lengthy note about my ride. Very depressing to see it displayed like all was well, and then to go in to look at it later and see much of it deleted.

Your suggestions of a proper warning, or an active counter, seem completely reasonable. What also seems reasonable is to allow longer descriptions--how much trouble/cost can that possibly amount to for Garmin? Please...

Naturally, after seeing that the note was OK and had been accepted, I deleted the copy that I had been working on in Word--and now it's truly gone, unrecoverable. A very simple usability issue here, with a very simple solution.
