A lesson in tracks and tracking please. 62S

Hi All
I am new to walking about with a GPS clutched in my hand following (and creating) tracks. I do however understand the technology and am not new to the outdoors.
I have a GPSmap 62S and am extremely happy with it, but need some more understanding of the track and archive.
10 000 points and 200 Tracks- Is this 10 000 points per track OR 10 000 divided between all 200 tracks.
I am doing a 200 km hiking trip over 12 days and I want to log the trip very accurately.
If I archive my track each day, do I still have access to the 10 000 points
Can I dump these daily saved tracks on to the memory chip?
At the same time, I have 3 saved tracks which I intend following on this trip, which altogether use
5 000 points.
Where on the unit can I see how many track points I have used. (or have remaining)
I would appreciate some more understanding on this matter please.

Regards
George

WOW, I did not realise how difficult my questions were, it's no wonder that I am struggeling. Are most people using routes and not tracks, explaining the lack of information?

    Hello George,

I do not have a GPSMAP62S. My friend has a GPSMAP60CS. The 60 has a 10,000 trackpoint limit like the 62 but only 20 stored tracks and each of those stored tracks has a 500 point limit.

The reason I am telling you this is because everytime my buddy stored a track the unit software would remove all the timestamps which eliminated all speed and fitness capabilities and then filtered the track down to 500 points which reduced the accuracy of the track a lot. He quit storing tracks in the device and uploads the active track to his laptop every night.

I suggest you record some practice tracks and upload them to your computer and then save those same tracks in the device and upload them and then compare the data. Maybe the 62 with its bigger memory stores all the track data.

Hopefully someone with a 62 will answer your other questions.

Yes the documentation is a bit weak
10 000 points and 200 Tracks- Is this 10 000 points per track OR 10 000 divided between all 200 tracks.

I believe it to be 200, 10 000 point 'Favorite' Tracks
I am doing a 200 km hiking trip over 12 days and I want to log the trip very accurately.

    Yikes!
If I archive my track each day, do I still have access to the 10 000 points

You can have it auto archive every day or you could set an interval for track points to be recorded and it will then store 3000 points at a time so that you will always have at least 7000 point in the current track history. This info goes to the internal memory, not the installed SD card.
At the same time, I have 3 saved tracks which I intend following on this trip, which altogether use
    5 000 points.
Where on the unit can I see how many track points I have used. (or have remaining)

You can have 10 000 points per track and 200 tracks made as favorites. You only need to be concerned about your current track recording interval found in SETUP->TRACKS
You can see the status of your current track memory by pressing MENU->RESET while on the trip computer page. But not to worry as you can recombine the auto archived segments later in BaseCamp or the like.

And as always make sure you have the latest firmware.
