Europe map not showing on 370 after update :-(

Hi There,

I have a bit of a problem with my Nuvi 370. I updated my maps yesterday, North America first, then Europe. Now my Garmin won't show the Europe map on the device. I tried downloading the Europe map again but to no avail. I saw a post somewhere about renaming .img files and then downloading the Europe map again, but I only can see .gma files on there, and to be honest, haven't really got the foggiest what to do next. Most annoying, as I live in the UK, so the Noth America map isn't really even needed!!!

Has anyone else had a similar problem or know how it could be fixed?

Many thanks in advance.

    nuvi 370 no maps

After updating European maps I could only see the USA when I searched. I was told this was a space problem, but the software during updating did not report this issue. When I moved the largest map file onto an sd card and used mapupdater again. The problem still did not get resolved. I am a very unhappy customer.I emailed the problem-no reply. I telephoned support still the problem remains unsolved. One other issue is that I purchased lifetime map updates for Europe and I am informed that this lifetime update expires in 2012. Whose lifetime?

Europe Map not showing on Nuvi 370 after update

I have exactly the same problem. I have seen some other posts that report the same issue on other devices, so Garmin clearly has a generic issue here and it is disappointing that the problem isn't listed somewhere. In fact it is even worse that I bought the lifetime upgrades in response to the direct email marketing from Garmin - surely they should warn of this. I have emailed support and am awaiting a reply.

Oh no....I have the same problem. I downloaded the Europe maps a couple of days ago (in response to a Garmin e-mail, and after checking compatibility on the Garmin website).

Guess what? I now have no European maps AT ALL. This is crazy.

Has anyone found a fix to this yet?

And hey, Garmin people - what's going on here?

I am one VERY unhappy customer.

OK, it looks like there is a solution.

You can find the Garmin response to this if you look under "MySupport" at the article "Why is my nuvi 370, nuvi 670 or nuvi 5000 unable to navigate after updating the European mapping?"

This tells us that Garmin know about the problem, but still don't feel inclined to warn their customers about it. The people at Garmin really need to pull their socks up a bit over this.

Their instructions aren't very accurate, and it requires a bit of thought to figure out what to do. We shouldn't really need to resort to geek-fixes for a commercial product like this.

To save you all the heartache / headache, here's the short version of the problem and the solution.

It turns out that older GPS units (like the Nuvi 370) can't handle a file larger than 2GB. In my case, the European maps were 2.4GB. There was space on the GPS memory card for this, but the processor / whatever couldn't handle it all.

The Garmin website tells us rather vaguely to select and install the regions we want, to create a smaller file. Their instructions are a bit cryptic.

    So, here's what to do:-

    1. Set your download settings so that you save a copy of the map on both your PC and your GPS (and not just on your device, which is the default).

    2. Let the download run....and run....and run....it takes ages....hours in fact......just like the download you first did when you ordered the maps and before you found about this problem....I hope that you aren't leaving for Europe soon.....when's your flight?....oh dear....maybe you can hire a GPS at the other end?....I really hope that your ISP doesn't charge you by the GB......are you still there?....perhaps you could use the time to have a good grumble to Garmin about this?

    3. Phew. When this is done, go to this link to download and install the programme "MapInstall":- http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=3291

    4. Open up MapInstall. You will need to plug your GPS in to the PC for it to boot up.

    5. In my case it automatically found the new maps on my PC that I had downloaded. You might need to hunt around for them, but it's pretty obvious what to do if this is the case.

    6. Now that you are sure you've got the downloaded map file on your PC, delete the new map from your device (using Explorer). I deleted the 3 files with the same filename prefix and datestamp that correlated with the time of the download.

Note: If you don't do this, you probably won't have space for your new maps. (If you don't feel brave enough to delete these files, then drag them to your PC desktop first!).

    7. In MapInstall, select the areas that you want to install. Keep an eye on the file size (displayed on the right) and remember the 2GB limit.

    8. Send the files to your unit. This takes ages. No, I mean it. AGES. HOURS! And there are many stages to the process. When's that flight......?

With any luck, that should work.

If you have any regions that you couldn't fit in to a 2GB file limit, another option is to put the in a separate file on an SD card in your unit.

This will be my next experiment.

    Watch this space.

    AND FINALLY....
Just in case anyone from Garmin should read this and hasn't yet realised that this IS NOT A GOOD SITUATION, then I would ask them have a think about how they would feel if they were due to set off on a journey, and thought it might be a good idea to update their map data before they left, and then found out that this new data had more-or-less disabled all of the useful features of their GPS, with NO WARNING and NO CLEAR INSTRUCTIONS on what to do next.

This is not good customer service.

Did you successfully install maps on the SD card on the nuvi 370?
Did you try maps (regions) which are giving file size greater than 2GB?

It is easy to install both maps with regions smaller than 2GB on the internal memory. I never tried to install maps on external memory and curios if somebody else did it.
