Spin Bike Cadence Sensor

I am trying to use an Edge 500 with my spin bike that has an ANT+ cadence sensor. My computer will only recognize the sensor as a speed only sensor and converts the info to mph rather than cadence. Any ideas ?

Probably stating the obvious but is crank arm magnet close enough to the sensor?
