Garmin 405- incorrect mileage & splits

I ran the Mardi Gras Marathon on Sunday & was COUNTING on my garmin for mile pace averages to keep me on track. All was going well until mile 10. The screen went to the compass screen, it started dinging & saying I had gone a mile when I had only gone about a quarter of a mile. It kept going off & giving me a MUCH faster pace than I KNEW I was running. When I finished the marathon, my garmin told me that I had run 42.87 miles @ 5:28 pace. The total time was close, but it was of by about 1.5 minutes because it also went on auto pause a I was running several times. I cannot express how distressing this all was! I kept finding other people w/ garmins or something similar to ask what pace we were running at!
Has this happened to anyone else? Is this going to become an every run occurence?
HELP!
  • Did you upload your run to Garmin Connect, and if so, could you provide a link to it?

A similar thing happened to me once during a race. It was a 5 miler. I had the VPP on and I was keeping right at my target pace. And then suddenly I had cranked out a super fast mile. When I got back home and looked at my activity, it turns out that I had momentarily lost GPS signal, and my track started hopping all over the place and giving me unreasonably large distances.

I've had various Garmin fitness devices for over three years, and this has happened only twice, but it does happen once in a while. Anyway, this might have been what happened to you. Check out the track of your race and see if that was the case.
