GPS newbie "I am so confused!"

Hi all. Just got my first GPS unit for porospecting in S.E. Alaska, Rhino 530. Reading the manual doesn't pull things together, especially a simple description of what mapsource, homebase, geocoaches, mapquest and PIO downloads are? Is there a source of beginner basics that explain these concerning what does what and/or is used for?
Whew, got a headache just getting around the garmin site and finding a forum link.Thanks for any help, Thomas

    Welcome to gps use!

    Welcome TJ!
    I'm new here but I've used gps receivers for a long time. Unfortunately not your model.
    My first gps receiver was a Garmin gpsIII that I bought new; that was some time ago. I've had more than ten. I've only had Garmin units, except for built-in units in cars.

    I still find them confusing! Sometimes difficult to use. I've had help along the way-- I've found several good forums.
    * www.gpspassion.com
    * www.gpsinformation.net IIRC
    * www.gpsreview.net

    All of my gps receivers have had maps. The first were not detailed at all; now they're very detailed.

    My gps receivers have been good and bad. Some took a long time to acquire signal, others have been very quick.
    Portable units have batteries. So if you're out alone you need to have navigation equipment and maps/charts.
    This is specially true because it's easy to drop and destroy portable units.

    Hope this helps.
    Hope that someone speaks up that has experience with your unit.
