Edge 705 Device not found

Hi,

I have upgraded with the 3.3 update for my 705 recently and my device is misbehaving. From about the time of the upgrade the openmaps map that I have on the microSD card does not load 90% of the time (there are no progress bars on the screen during startup and only the base map is available. Oddly, occasionally it does load. If that was the only problem I would roll back to 3.1 and see if it works ok.

HOWEVER, of far more concern... Over the last week I've not connected my device to my computer. Now I try and it is not recognised (the device simply turns on, it doesn't go to USB mode. I had changed nothing on my computer (but have sinced tried reinstalling the Garmin USB drivers and upgrading Garmin Communicator. I've even tried it on another computer, but it is not working so I can't even roll back the upgrade.

Can anyone please help??? How can I roll back the upgrade if the device is not recognised, or is there another fix?

When trying to connect with Basecamp I get the following error "No devices were found. Please make sure your devices were connected to the computer and turned on, then try again. You may also need to set the interface option on your gps to garmin or host". I suspect that this is just the standard Basecamp error for 'Device not Found', but don't know what 'interface option' it is talking about.

Worst case, I'd completely reset the device, but I guess I'd lose my data and still have the 3.3 upgrade, so doubt that anything would be fixed (and I can't work out how to do a hard reset...

If anyone else has these problems please let me know!

Regards,
Matthew

My Edge 705 is also running software 3.30, GPS 2.10, and seems to have exactly the same problem. I can successfully connect my Forerunner 110 via USB to my MAC OSX 10.6, so I guess there should be no issue with my MAC. However, even after a hard reset of the 705, when I connect it to a USB port, it starts up the device instead of being recognized as an external filesystem in finder. This makes it impossible to transfer data and is a huge pain. I'm totally at a loss as to how to fix this problem:mad:
  • Sounds like it could be a faulty cable, are you able to try another cable?

Tried 2 other cables but all behave the same. All cables were less 50cm long. Also tried to connect to a windows laptop instead but get the same behaviour - the device starts up instead of being mounted as an external filesystem.

    Here is a wild guess.
Press and hold the power button 1-2 seconds.
Might force a switch into mass storage mode.
If that does not work try the "Boot Block"

    hi Don,
That definitely sounds like the problem I'm having but I had no luck - there were no devices in the dropdown menu after I downloaded as instructed and when I plugged the 705 in it kept getting the same "not recognised" messages and no device was found

Was this problem ever resolved? I've seen at least three threads discussing this problem, and not one of them ever indicates if the original poster ever got a solution. I am asking because my Edge 705 began exhibiting same issue today with my MAC. I plug it in via USB cable and the 705 just powers up and doesn't show up in the Finder. I've tried turning the unit off, holding the joystick in up position and plugging into USB cable and waiting for the MAC to recognize...it recognizes the microSD card, not the 705. MAC alerts me with "drive is not initialized". I've tried the WebUpdater, tried soft reboot...no joy. I've just e-mailed Garmin support with issue...hoping I get some help. Any ideas from anyone?

Starting to look at prices for a replacement...frustrating because I've used it for 2+ years and it was working just five days ago.

    Hi,
No - I've never had the problem resolved and have not been able to use the device either other than to do a ride... I can't upload my activities and I can't download routes either because the device is not recognized. Has anyone had any luck with this??
