I've installed the req'd Garmin software on my laptop but when I connect my GPS to the laptop and try to receive a map from the gps it won't, says there are no maps. But the topo map of my area is on the map page on the gps. I can download waypoints etc. from the gps so I know the software is working. Anyone know what I have to do to get the map down?

Anyone know what I have to do to get the map down?

    What Garmin software? BaseCamp? MapSource?
Do you have a Garmin preprogrammed microSD card in your 76CSx or did you load the maps onto a card yourself?

You cannot copy maps from a GPS to your PC. BaseCamp can view maps on a GPS unit but it doesn't copy them to the PC.

If you want to use maps on your GPS and a PC you have to purchase the CD/DVD version of the maps.

    maps from GPS

I have a GPSMAP 76CSx with a micro SD with Garmin TOPO Canada Central loaded. When I launch MapSource, connect my GPS and try to receive maps, waypoints etc from my GPS I get everything but the map with the error-mess; Some maps could not be opened because the following Map source products are not installed- TopoCanada V4. Both the hardware and apps are registered. The Manual and help contents tell me that I can receive the map from the GPS and it is on the menu bar on the top of the screen. Next step?

Are the maps on a Garmin preprogrammed microSD card or a card a friend gave you (with the maps on it)? If so, as I've already said, you cannot "copy" the maps to the PC. Your only solution is to buy the CD/DVD version if you want them there. If you'd done that you could also put them on a microSD card but the reverse is not true.

What MapSource retrieves is a list of maps in GPS not the maps themselves. MapSource is giving you an error because the maps aren't on the PC so it can't display them.

I thought BaseCamp could view maps in a 76CSx but I just tried (I have one) and it doesn't work even in mass storage mode. I suspect, but don't know (don't have any preprogrammed cards), that BaseCamp won't show maps on your microSD card (in a reader) either.

    maps to laptop

I have both mapsource and base camp installed. I have the Canada map on a micro SD in my GPS. I have no trouble looking at my day's trips on my laptop and would like to see them overlaid on the same segment of map as I see on my map page on my GPS. I have even copied the map from the micro SD to the Garmin directory on my laptop. I get the error mess. that I haven't got Canada v4 loaded? I don't want to copy the map from the GPS to my laptop, just view it as a layer when I ask Mapsource to bring it down from my GPS. Base camp is no better! There is no manual for base camp so who knows, maybe it can be done but I haven't figured it out yet. Thanks for your suggestions.

    ? on map

What does the "?" mean when it pops up on my map page on my GPSmap76? What is it looking for? Usually on my first waypoint "House".

The ? actually alternates with a black triangle. It's show you that the units last location was at that point but is doesn't currently have a fix of your actual position.

In short its telling you "I think you're here but are you?".

The ? disappears once your 76CSx has a fix.

Thank you very much Stuartmw, not one of the 3rd party Garmin "texts" I bought gave me the answer. Do you use the Bird's Eye View software? Thanks again.

Do you use the Bird's Eye View software?

No. The 76CSx doesn't support Birds Eye images to my knowledge and I don't have another unit that does.
