New Activity Type: Orienteering

The new Garmin models (110, 210, 410) are now the standard clocks used by orienteers, not for navigation, but for keeping all the data and then exporting it and put it over the orienteering maps after the trainings or competitions (using a software called QuickRoute) witch gives us a very important analysis of all the details of the training/race, because the athletes can see exactly where they were, where they slow the pace, where they made mistakes.
So, looking at the enourmous ammount of orienteering users of Garmin Connect, I think there should be a new activity type: Orienteering.
Thanks

I totally agree with this request. New season is starting here in Finland and I'm ready to change all my trail running events to orienteering. Thanks!
  • What's wrong with using trail running for orienteering? Do you need a different data structure for orienteering than what is available for trail running?

  • Hi!
The problem I experience is that the reports in Garmin connect use all "running" activity data together, which makes the data and the reports skewed. Orienteering running is of course completely different from pounding the concrete, trackrunning or trailrunning - those kinds of running are much more similar and stats can go together - like average pace, average cadence, etc. When you mix in orienteering as one type of running, those reports are not usable anymore.  (This issue should apply for obstacle course running as well, right?)

Any ideas for workaround on this?

As I wrote in the other thread, you can use one of the unused running subcategories. In Reports » Progress Summary, you can then run reports for each subcategory separately.

And if you need all of the available running subcategories, and hence do not have any one free for the orienteering, use the Event Type (for example Touring) for tagging your orienteering activities. Again, in the Progress Summary, you can run reports searately for this type of Event Type.

But what we NEED as orienteers is for the running metrics to be separated.  So for example the VO2 score shouldn't use 'O' data but the training load and recovery should.
