Unresponsive Nuvi 3790

Hi All
Have contacted support but as yet no answer from them, so here is my problem to see if any of you have experienced the same thing
I have a 3790t only two weeks old, the other day on the way to work the map disappeared from the screen, all the other information was there just no map and no Icon representing me.

When I got to work and switch of the ignition the Nuvi switch off as normal, then tried to switch it back on, it said loading maps for ages and when it finished the touch screen was completely unresponsive meaning I could do nothing with it, did the Hard reset with the button for 10 seconds, no change.

The next day all was back working, now three days later it’s doing it again.
Driving me nuts this thing.
Something I think is wrong in software and the processor is running so hard it is not servicing the touch screen.

Software version 3.60
Are there any Garmin people here to help?

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Im about to loose my temper with my nuvi3790t :-( ordered it from US, at first everything went well with the unit. its very responsive having not a single issue with it . after 2 days of using it i noticed that everytime i tried to simulate GPS simulator indoors, unit freezes so i decided to update the unit using webupdater from software version 2.60 to 3.60 and install all the additional optional update put check mark and start updating. update was a succsess however i find my unit taking forever to show me the map when i click on viewmap. also it will take like 5mins calculating 2km route and will need to wait again if the unit recalculates . also i cannot enable my GPS simulator if i do unit will freeze .

Is there a way to revert the firmware upgrade?
good thing im not the only one having this issue .
  • Hi
About 30-40 minutes after posting this here I had a reply from Garmin support (possibly just a coincidence after waiting 4 days) and this is what the reply was.

Thank you for contacting Garmin Europe.

I do apologise for the delay in the response but I will be happy to assist you with your enquiry, it is possible the software update didn’t load correctly so I would recommend running this again using the webupdater, which can be found at http://www8.garmin.com/products/webupdater/howtoinstall.jsp
Once this is done then I think that the best step would be to remove all user data from your unit by performing a master reset. As this will delete all user content you may wish to back up important files you have added, before you start this sequence. Backing your user data up is only possible if you have a unit that can go into mass storage when connected to a PC or MAC.

    Windows Operating System

    1. Connect your GPS unit to a PC via USB cable
    2. Open My Computer
    3. Double click the units drive once it appears
    4. Double click the Garmin folder
    5. Double click the GPX folder
    6. Select all files within this folder by highlighting them
    7. Right click the selected files
    8. Left click Copy
    9. You can now Paste these files into another directory on your PC

    Mac

    1. Connect your GPS unit to a Mac via USB cable
    2. Open the Garmin Drive on your desktop
    3. Click the Garmin folder
    4. Click the GPX folder
    5. Select all files within this folder by highlighting them

To perform the reset, please follow the procedure below

    1. Start with the unit OFF and unplugged from power
    2. Turn the unit on and when the Screen comes on, Touch and hold the lower right corner of the screen with an index finger or the eraser end of a pencil
    3. Continue touching and holding the lower right hand corner of the screen

    4. You will see a new message: Do you really want to erase all user data?
    5. Remove your finger from the touchscreen when this message displays
    6. Touch Yes

Once this has reset, please leave your unit in clear view of the sky for up to 45 minutes. It should re-establish the satellites within this time, however if you still experience problems after this then the unit will probably have to be returned for repair, If in warranty I would recommend initially returning to the store you purchased this from as they are legally responsible to ensure you receive a repair/replacement. Alternatively I will be happy to book this in for you. We have a tracking system, so if you can let me know the information below I will generate a reference number for you, and let you know how to ship your GPS to us.

The serial number of the unit:

    Date of purchase:

Full description of the fault if not already known:

Great I thought OK now all I need to do is get the touch screen to feel my finger push, but when I switch on the unit it does not respond to any touch screen commands.
It did now and again come back for a few minutes but this is no good because switching the unit off and back on again only brings up the padlock screen and pressing the on button for 10 seconds locks me out again using the touch as it starts, so I left it on until the battery drained then plugged it into the car (fingers crossed and pressing the corner of the screen) let it repower, and actually managed to get the reset button to appear.
All is now working again, but I think they need to have a reset switch in settings that sets a flag on the next time you turn the unit on to tell it you want a hard reset automatically.

My Nuvi 3790 does not want to boot up and does not want to connect to PC
  • If nuvi 37xx hangs and does not respond, you can try CPU reset - press and hold power button for at leas 10 seconds.
