Why my garmin taking me to go a longer route?

Well, I got my new garmin nuvi 1200 from christmas,
well, I used it for while and loved it.
But now i am concern about it, because I want to know how many hrs of drive to get in Minnesota. So i typed the address and it said take 8 1/2 hrs to get there. I was like it kinda far so I looked up on map.yahoo.com and it said 5 1/2 hrs. I was surprised and gotta be something wrong. The map showing me that I had to drive far west then north. Instead going NW.
My gps taking wrong route which makes more hrs of driving. My gps navigator setting is on "faster time".
So I went to my buddies and he have a nextar gps, said 5 1/2 hrs and going right route.
Nextar GPS will take me to go NW.
How can i fix the problem? Or Do I need to update?

Thanks, Kole

The first thing that I would check is
    Tools
    Settings
    System
    Navigation
    Avoidances
Make sure that you haven't checked something by mistake, such as "Avoid Highways" that woud take you on a longer route.

If there are a lot of toll roads in the area, "Avoid Toll Roads" could be an issue also.
