Garmin 450 screen fades on start-up

Garmin 450 was an X-mas gift, and worked fine. After replacing batteries (several sets, polarity checked), on start-up, screen shows logo, copyright and model info, 'loading photos', then fades while displaying 'loading waypoints, tracks, and routes...' until nothing shows. Taps on screen ineffective. Manual seems to require seeing screen to reset.

Any help?

First I would try to get the unit into forced Mass Storage mode. Press on the button while connecting to a computer via USB. If you can connect in mass storage mode, back-up your user files, actually, or just to be safe, everything in the Garmin folder.

Remove the uSD card if you have one inserted. Press on the top left corner of the screen and keep it pressed as you turn on the device. You should be asked if you want to reset your device and lose all user data. Do ti1

Hopefully that will put you on the right track.
