Help!! Firmware Update 2.5 to 2.7 for Forerunner 405

I just updated my firmware and the screen froze saying "loader loading"....

I had to reset the watch after about an hour on that screen and checked the software and it still reads version 2.5. So I went to garmin connect to try the update again, but it says my watch is up to date... and won't let me try to update again.

Why does the softare on the watch say 2.5 and the website says its up to date??

    Yup...I've experienced the same issue. I logged a request with Garmin and they're saying that we need to reset our watches (full reset). I've emailed them back saying I'd rather not do so since I'm hearing others having the same issue.

    Here is the reply I got from them at first of what to do:

    I am sorry to hear you are experiencing issues with your Forerunner 405, and I would be happy to help you find a resolution to this issue. It sounds like this may be a software issue. I would recommend you update the software in your unit. Software Updates enhance the existing features of the GPS device, add new features as applicable, and fix reported issues. You may need to reset the device before you can update it.

    Prior to the Software Update, please ensure:
    • USB ANT Stick is plugged in and the Garmin ANT Agent is running
    • Forerunner 405 is paired with the Garmin ANT Agent (consult your owner's manual or utilize this link: http://connect.garmin.com/help/start/ant )
    • Forerunner 405 is within range of the USB ANT Stick

    To update the software on the Forerunner 405:
    1. Click the link below for the Forerunner 405 Software Update:

    2. Scroll down and click Agree to the Software License Agreement
    3. Confirm your Forerunner 405 appears in the window (If multiple devices are present, select your device)
    4. Click Update Software

    This will transfer the Software Update to the connected USB ANT Stick. The Garmin ANT Agent then establishes a connection to the Forerunner 405 and transfers the Software Update to the device. During the transfer process, the Forerunner 405 will display the Loader Loading message. You will receive confirmation on the Garmin ANT Agent that the software update was successful.

    It is possible the Forerunner 405 may have accumulated some corrupt data in it. It may be necessary to reset the Forerunner 405 back to its original factory settings.

    Follow these steps to reset the device:
    *Warning - A Master Reset will erase all saved data on the Forerunner.
    1. Press and hold the Start/Stop and Lap/Reset buttons simultaneously
    2. Keep both buttons pressed for 8 seconds or until the screen goes blank
    3. Then release the Start/Stop button and continue to hold the Lap/Reset button for an additional 3 seconds
    4. Release the Lap/Reset button
    5. Select the Enter (Start/Stop) button to clear user data

    Once these steps are complete, follow the setup prompts. Set profile options and charge the battery completely before using. [/SIZE]

    I have the same problem. I have done a full reset twice, but the watch still freezes while reading "Loader Loading...." and nothing is transferred. I very much look forward to a solution.

    This issue is being caused by an error in the downloader on the website. We are working to fix the problem.

    There is a workaround detailed here for anyone comfortable locating and modifying a device info file.


    I followed the instructions but I still get the same - the phone locks at Loader Loading phase. Could you provide more help, please?

  • The issue resolved by the linked fix is the website reporting that a unit is up to date when it is not, and therefore not sending the update package to the ANT Agent. This is not in any way related to the device getting stuck at the Loader Loading screen.

    Please note that transfering the update takes approximately 10 minutes, and the device will display "Loader Loading" for this entire time. If the device is remaining on the "Loader Loading" screen after the ANT Agent has indicated a transfer failure, I recommend contacting Garmin Support.

    That the update takes ten minutes is really useful information... and this needs to be made clear to the user. I tried unsuccessfully to update my 405's firmware this afternoon, from 2.5 to 2.7, and was "stuck" at the "Loader Loading" screen as well. It was only after searching the forums, and in particular this forum thread, that I learned that the update took this amount of time.

    Yes, I was able to upgrade the firmware successfully.

    It shouldn't have taken three tries, though. Seeing the watch, seemingly frozen at "LOADER LOADING..." isn't encouraging or informative.

    I am experiencing EXACTLY the same issue as the other posters. It has been almost a month since you posted that you were working on an solution. I have multiple Garmin 405's and NEVER had a problem until I updated the Garmin software. Is there a solution? My unit says it has version 2.5, the program says it is up-to-date, and I have tried doing a hard-reset of the unit twice. Also, I would be comfortable modifying the file, but I have a Mac instead of a PC and don't know where that file is. This should be a very simple programming fix that should be then pushed out in a new version. Is there any update?

    My issue is that the website says the firmware has been transferred to Ant Agent but nothing happens after that. I've tried the update process 3 or 4 times now, all witht the same result. Any ideas?
