Garmin 62s 24K Topo Lack of Detail?

Former Member

Hi,
I did some searching and couldn't find an answer. I don't know if I have a problem to troubleshoot or if it's just a setting. I just downloaded 24k topo maps for California and am not sure if what I'm seeing is correct. The map is mostly in black and white except for major roads and the occasional park. Once over a park the background is green, but thats it? I checked some screen shots on garmins website and the first one is close to what I see at the very best, but the others with shading have much more detail. I was expecting a little more out of these maps. Especially with the cost. I'm hopeful there is something wrong. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Yes it might be a setting. Page 12 of your manual. Map Settings, Advanced Map Setup. You can pick the amount of detail and shading.

Did you buy the DVD or the SD chip? I bought the DVD and it came with 4 states and the detail on my Edge705 is very good.

Hopefully the lack of detail is just a setting.

I've messed around with the settings a little with no luck. I found the detail setting and that didn't work... I have yet to see any shading at all. I didn't purchase the topo cd or sd I did the download option. Now looking back It would feel a bit better on a cd..

Try zooming in to where you see the scale line say 800 feet or so. Is the picture still dark or do you now see the topo lines?

So I gather you downloaded this to your computer and then transfered California to your 62s using MapSource. Is the detail and color good on your computer? Also the Garmin 24K topo series should support "Auto Routing" just like the City Navigator series. If yours does not then maybe you got a corrupted download.

The other possibility is you downloaded CA TOPO from GPSFileDepot. I have that topo and when you transfer it to your GPS you have to select 2 sets of map tiles to get all the info. One tile set is just contours the other is all the roads and details. There is no shading and very few labels.

    Feeling kinda of stupid...

Sorry for taking such a long time to reply. It's been a busy time. I feel kinda stupid. It appears that there isn't any shading or color in topos at night...I had no clue! I only had time to mess with my gps at night, but a couple of days ago I checked it out in the day and low and behold! Amazing detail and shading. I wonder if there is any way to have daytime detail and shading at night. Any who. For those who are wondering I downloaded it from garmins website. I had to download it to a micro sd because it was too large for the internal memory. Any idea on how to get shading at night?
