Calories field empty on Garmin Connect??

Former Member

I am using a Garmin 450 for enduro training, mountain biking and hiking. I have the Garmin heart rate monitor and it works flawlessly. When I upload to Garmin Connect it shows everything beautifully BUT my calories column is always empty with just a -- in there. I have my profile up to date with my height and weight and heart beat range. What am I missing? It would be really nice to see the number....

Thanks in advance for your help.

I uploaded another workout today, same situation. Does anyone from Garmin read these posts or is it proper to call tech support?
  • As far as I know, Garmin Connect only displays the calories calcuated by the device as you are exercising. Garmin Copnnect will not post-process the data.

The Garmin 450 series are not aimed at the fitness user, and a quick check of the specs on the Garmin webpage verifies that they don't calculate calories.

    Thanks for the reply.

I knew the Oregon did not calculate calories. One of the main reasons I used Garmin Connect was hoping it would accurately calculate the calories for me. With the plethora of websites that will do this for free based off of your average heart rate one would assume that Garmin could post-process this for us more accurately. The problem with most other websites is that their calculation is based off of average heart rate for a given time. Whereas Garmin has all of our heart rate information and time, so they should be able to calculate it more accurately.

It may not be what you are looking for, but you can manually update the activity once you have uploaded.

Open the activity and click on the pencil icon and you can change variables. You could use this to add the calorie data.
  • Maybe it's the device

On Mon, 27 Dec 2010 I was cycling using my Edge 500 and the calories are shown on my GC activity.

Yes, it is the device. He is using a handheld navigation device, not a fitness device.

I'm going to dig this up since its still irritating me. Can SOMEONE at Garmin fix this with ANY of the Garmin software? All of the data is in the GPX file....

Garmin created the Oregon with the ability to display and record heart rate data but none of the software fully supports viewing or editing the data fully. Not MapSource, not BaseCamp, not Connect. Why?
