Bing maps not so bad

I am not sure what the fuss is all about over Bing maps.

I like the new garmin connect updates. It's great to see laps on the maps, I also love the compare activities.

Bing maps seem fine, but I am just tracking runs. I also live outside of a major U.S. City.

I would rather have gamin focus on an iPad app, which I would pay for, the worry about this bing issue. It sucks that gamin connect flash based features do not work on iPad.

I bet the decision has to do with the licensing rates for google maps versus bing maps. Maybe the reason for the Change is increasing map license rates by google? I do not know, but it would put things in perspective for the hyper upset users.

Gamin has never warranted to it's users that it would not modify gamin connect. Neither is it reasonable to assume that gamin should be precluded from operating it's service at a reasonable cost.
  • Well then good for you buddy. Look at post #5 for a clue as to what the rest of us are talking about.....

Oh, you figured out what's in the map in post #5.... SPLENDID! Well done sir!

Well then, you are fine, so the rest of us will shut the heck up then, yes?....

    Another epiphany!!! yay....

You can do what you want...my point is simple and apparently beyond your grasp. This change doesn't affect many of us and just because you think it's the end of the world and a personal attack from Garmin in actuality it's neither. But please continue to whine...it's funny.
  • Thanks for the support. If Garmin ever does something that bugs you then rest assured that it'll be reciprocated....

Why would he lend support to something that he believes is a non-issue? Unless he's your bestest friend in the world which seems unlikely...

It would seem that he's snorted too much bull and is unable to see your point.

Sadly too many here don't believe that there's a world outside of their national border.
  • Bottom line, all the folks that are so unhappy with Bing don't speak for everyone that's a Garmin user despite the littany of "Bing sucks" posts.

    Try reading it again. Lol..."capiche".
  • Too be honest I'm a bit with JOHNLEJA, albeit for somewhat different reasons.

The Bing maps on Garmin Connect do not affect the operation of the device in any way.

Garmin Training Centre has far worse maps for data analysis anyway.

There are much better apps and websites around for doing post activity analysis than those provided by Garmin.

Garmin are not going to change back, irrespective of the wailing whining abuse fired at them.

    So move on!
  • This has nothing to do with international borders but rather where garmin should allocate their resources.

Just like many do not care about iPad support I am not concerned aout many of the anti bing issues. Nor do i need to be. I can publicly expressly view that bing is a non issue for me ( I log 20-22 hours of activity a month). Why? Because it is important for garmin to know that this issue is probably not relevant to a majority of their average/typical users (which I am sure they know). I would much rather have them spend their resources($$) on other things.

For those of you who chide me for not supporting them, when I may one day need their support, that is quit simply ridiculous. You do not support many of the things I want on GC, nor need you. There is a finite limit to resources and garmin is not required to make us all happy all of the time.

If you don't like it, complain, raise a stink or change products.
Good luck. But I am not supportive of garmin spending money on this issue that could be used for improvements that would better suit me.
  • I'm sure that you're a nicer fella than the fool you come across as.

It is not relevant whether I am a nice "fella" or not.

As far as your calling me a fool, I do not appreciate that. You are simply upset because I do not support your cause. But i am not required to. Nor do I need to be quiet about my opinion that the switch to bing maps is not so bad. It's fair, reasoned and honestly expressed. If that makes me a "fool" you, fella, should look in the mirror.

You can no longer scroll within the embedded Bing map on Garmin Connect. You have to manually click the zoom buttons and then becouse it has zoomed to a point were you dont want to look at you have to click the scroll buttons, takes forever. Totaly worthless.
  • As much as I hate to agree with philipshambrook, I do. I hated the change to Bing just as much as anybody, and also how it was implemented. However, like philipshambrook says, there are other tools/apps/websites available to get around this dreadful decision. They work, and are extensively covered on this forum, use 'em and move on.

On a side note - after being invited to a running challenge from some friends who use Nike+, I am overall impressed with some of the features of their site. Unfortunately it is based very heavily on Flash, which makes it slow, and prone to crashing. But the community feel, challenges, and trainings, make it a great online motivation environment, which Garmin severely lacks! Garmin should definitely focus more on this aspect of running - bringing people together and helping to motivate them.

By the way, there is an free online tool which will convert Garmin activities (along with GPS data if you want) directly into your Nike+ account. It can take an upload of .TCX files or you an simply plug in your activity number. Pretty sweet.
