Bing maps not so bad

I am not sure what the fuss is all about over Bing maps.

I like the new garmin connect updates. It's great to see laps on the maps, I also love the compare activities.

Bing maps seem fine, but I am just tracking runs. I also live outside of a major U.S. City.

I would rather have gamin focus on an iPad app, which I would pay for, the worry about this bing issue. It sucks that gamin connect flash based features do not work on iPad.

I bet the decision has to do with the licensing rates for google maps versus bing maps. Maybe the reason for the Change is increasing map license rates by google? I do not know, but it would put things in perspective for the hyper upset users.

Gamin has never warranted to it's users that it would not modify gamin connect. Neither is it reasonable to assume that gamin should be precluded from operating it's service at a reasonable cost.

I'd take a look at the 200+ comments in the "Change to Bing Maps is dissappointing" string. I think there's plenty of specific examples on why the change is a big deal to so many people (especially for users outside the US).

For me specifially, I find the map less readable, the satellite view out of focus when looking above a certain altitude, and the new addition of "terrain" view as useless since it doesn't provide altitude markers the way any topo map would (and as Google maps did/does).
  • Change to Bing doesn't affect me...I run or bike and don't care in the least what it looks like on a map. I care about the data and improvement in that data... *shrug* Bottom line, all the folks that are so unhappy with Bing don't speak for everyone that's a Garmin user despite the littany of "Bing sucks" posts.

Ok, so you don't use maps.... Of course they don't speak for your opinion about something you don't use in the first place, right?

So I guess the question is how people who actually use the stuff feel about it... or?

Plus, it seems that many are as irritated or more by how they treated the whole change. That is something that in the future could, potentially, affect you as well.

thank you sir/madam for careing for yourself.

So you dont know what the fuzz is all about because you live in a place where you have some sort of mapcoverage? And all the rest of us a suckers for living in places where Google Maps have coverage and Bing dont?

With all do respect sir/madam, please tell me where I am here and what I have been doing. (All my maps and satellite images are now like this, and I've been using it almost daily for the past 2 years.) This is bing map in hybrid mode showing both the roads/map and the satellite image:
    " />">

I cannot send GC links anymore to people because it doesnt show anything. Its been totally destroyed.

So thank you sir/madam for careing for yourself.

Treated? I still happily/successfully bike with my 705 and run with my 410...if you want to read about poor treatment go buy a Tacx Fortius and try their software. This is nothing...point being, I'm fine with this and I'm sure I'm not alone.

Well Snort, I'm sure you're not alone either, but as you can see there's a fair amount of people who relied on GC's prior functionality and were upset enough to find their way to the forum to voice their opinion.

So, congrats, glad it works for you, and continue to train how you do. For those of us who feel the loss of functionality, I guess we'll continue to squeek, or try to find another tool that better fits our need, as some have already done.
  • The posts of the upset GC users are certainly relevant but they are not the only voice. Nor are they necessarily the most important advice.

For me, personally, I would prefer that GC focus on improving GC functionality and an iPad app over international maps. Although I bet gamin knows, the international users may not be a big enough customer base to subsidize the international map costs. If so, why should I have to subsidize that limited customer base.

So you lost functionality - although some complaints seem overly pathetic, like out of focus- too bad. Buy a new product if you do not like it. You garmin product nevr came with any promise or guaranty of continued GC functionaliity.

Your iPad never came with a guarantee of a Garmin App..... go buy another product.

Doesn't sound so smart when flipped around does it?

It's not particularly helpful to adopt a view of "I'm alright Jack 'cos I'm in the US, who cares that you got a down grade because you're overseas".

I'm sure that you're a nicer fella than the fool you come across as.

Well then good for you buddy. Look at post #5 for a clue as to what the rest of us are talking about.....

    This is nothing...

Oh, you figured out what's in the map in post #5.... SPLENDID! Well done sir!

point being, I'm fine with this and I'm sure I'm not alone.

Well then, you are fine, so the rest of us will shut the heck up then, yes?....

    Another epiphany!!! yay....

Thanks for the support. If Garmin ever does something that bugs you then rest assured that it'll be reciprocated....
