Detour function on 3790T

On my former GPS, a non-Garmin unit, if I wanted to detour somewhere en route to a final destination, I entered the new destination and was asked by the GPS whether this replaced the old destination or was now a detour en route to the final destination.

How do you add a detour using the 3790T? There seems to be two options with this unit:
1) Replace the former destination with this new one, or
2) Add the new destination to the END of the route, which is not what a detour is supposed to do.

This may be user error, so I'd appreciate any insight.

The Garmin term "Detour" may hold a different meaning to yours. For example if the traffic is slow or the road blocked , you hit "Detour" and the Garmin computes a detour to avoid that road if possible. Its a bit like a detour sign that you see when driving.

If you want to visit another place "en route" then simply do a "Where To?" and it will ask if you want to "Add to Current Route", I believe the Garmin will then compute the quickest route to both places based on your current position.
