If you're looking for map functionality (as opposed to satellite/aerial imagery) then using the OpenStreetMap overlay on Bing maps may give better results than either Bing or Google, depending on where you run/ride.
I can't believe it... I live in Seoul (South Korea) - loved the maps function. Would show people where I had gone, compare routes, and track possible new ones... Google maps was perfect for this.
Bing Maps is HORRIBLE! It's not even accurately aligned. I start on one of the largest roads in Seoul. Bing Maps doesn't even see it.
The route on Bing maps looks like I run on water!!! No - it doesn't register bridges either! But that's not the point - Bing Maps actually seems to think that my route really does involve me running at 11 km/hr on water!
The zoom function is non-existent.
I spoke to Customer Service and their response was that Garmin has a history of working with market leaders. Then why are we not using the clear market leader - Google Maps!!!!!!??
I just paid top money (U$ 375) for a brand new Forerunner 410 and this is not my first Garmin product.
Now I have to live with BING? Come on, Garmin. Have you done any research whatsoever about the quality of these maps compared to Google Maps. Apart from being outdated they're completely innacurate! What led you to that decision? I smell Micro$oft money involved... it's the only answer. And no one deserves that.
You could at least let us choose what to use. Many users I know have the same complaint. It's about time to take some action!
 I've had my FR405 6mo. Thought I had to buy a special upgrade to get a good map. I live on the edge of the civilization so never thought there would be a street detail available. Last week I ran in the heart of or State Capitol and Bing maps was clueless. BING HAS NO MAPS... Get us back to Google Maps!!!
What a shame that good products like the Garmin 500 and Garmin/Connect have their functionality and usability is seriously compromised by stuffing Bing Maps down users throats. This may be a deal breaker for me.
However for those in need of rides plotted on Google Maps, there's is cool new site out there called Strava.com that is sort of a hybrid social networking for cyclist site. They charge $6/mo for unlimited uploads or offer five uploads per month with the free membership. Beware though that it seems there's no way to restrict access to your ride profiles in Strava so your stealth miles may not be so stealthy.
